Asserting Yourself

This book is extremely useful. I can truly say that it has changed the quality of my relationships in a profound way. The authors teach you how to solve problems with people in relationships ranging from strangers to friends to family. I found answers to problem situations that had frustrated me for years. It taught me how to stand up for myself and ask people to change their undesirable behavior in a way that they are willing to cooperate with. (Most of the time). I am amazed at how well their techniques work. This is not about how to control people. It is about how to control your self. There is an alternative to fighting or giving in. If you want to have happier relationships with people and feel much better about yourself, buy this book.

Excellent book

This is a very good book. Unlike other books in this category which dish out a lot of advice, this book gives practical step-by-step instructions that can be easily implemented in real life. The authors have used some innovative techniques from the fields of acting and theatre into assertiveness training. Reading and rereading this book often will definitely help everybody to improve their own lives as well as the lives of people whom they interact with.

Not bad, but...

in many ways it's interchangeable with alot of other books on the topic of assertiveness out there. It's worth reading, certainly, I just wouldn't pay full price for it. The DESC model, and the quiz at the beginning to help the reader determine how assertive s/he currently is are great. The material on self esteem and stress were boring to me; I'd seen it before with other sources. Chapters 4 and 5 were the best; they got into the exercises/activities and the DESC model. The remaining chapters weren't as strong. The book started to drag at that point. That said, I do like that the author gave the reader alot of opportunity for practice; the exercises themselves are good. I just wish that there'd been more actual content and information. She could've done a supplemental workbook to include all the extra exercises.

Great introduction to intermediate-level Python

This is a great intermediate Python book. The explanations are clear and informative. The author did a great job filling in the necessary prerequisite conceptual knowledge required to grasp the paradigms. The author also did a good job "building up" within each section, i.e. he doesn't open a firehose at the reader but rather explains concepts logically and in manageable steps, building upon each layer to bring the reader towards a fuller understanding of the concept(s) being presented.

There were only minor errors in the text (most of which I've reported to the author via Twitter, with the exception of a couple simple spelling errors), which is outstanding for a book written by a programmer (I've come to expect far more spelling errors from programmer authors -- especially in examples). I'm impressed -- the book is well written.

Part II combines theory and practice more than in other areas of the book, and I was hoping to see more on multiple inheritance / mixins, but the material covered was excellent. Using examples from Django for metaclasses was very helpful to me.

The asyncio section was good but only applicable to Python 3.4, I was hoping for more discussion of threading and Python 2 solutions as well (perhaps even discussion of greenlets contrasted to threads -- up until this point the book offered approaches for both v2 and v3). I also expected to at least see a brief explanation of the GIL when discussing asynchronous programming in Python, but no such reference was made. Even so, the explanation of the asyncio module was very elucidating and I believe the author exceptionally achieved his goals for that section of the book (it isn't completely fair to give a negative review for something excluded by the author).

Overall, I highly recommend this book to Python programmers looking to move beyond the basics into an intermediate level of the Python language and am glad to give it four stars.

A good coverage of intermediate topics.

Python is a high-level, versatile programming language used in many fields, from web development up to machine learning, passing through image analysis and game programming. It is easy to fall in love with it. Having such a vibrant community, and being used in top projects such as Docker and Openstack, results in a lot of titles available to anyone interested in getting started with it. On the other hand, those Pythonists that already know the basics and wanna dive into the most advanced features of the language often strive to find a valid source of information. Professional Python belongs to this short list of books dedicated to advanced topics, those that any professional needs to know and that most alternatives do not touch at all.

Released in 2015, Professional Python is a medium sized book that, as the title suggests, covers advanced topics. As such, it targets intermediate to experienced Pythonists and avoids anything related to the basics: installation, classes, data types. The book is split into sections, each spanning several chapters. Each chapter focuses on a very specific subject, such as metaclasses, decorators or generators. After a short introduction, the author presents a scenario, used to show many different features or ways to tackle the problem. One paragraph, one feature. This is a winning approach. Instead of long sermons, the authors dives into a very specific topic, showing how that feature improves the initial scenario.

The topics discussed by the author are well chosen and appropriate for such an advanced title. The examples are short but intense. There is plenty of code, and while the author often goes through it step by step, the reader more often than not needs to give it a second read to fully understand what is going on. Having a terminal open and trying to tinker the code presented is probably the best way to get the most out of this book.

Overall Professional Python is a good book. There are better alternatives, but it's a good read. After reading the first chapter, dedicated to decorators, I was expecting something better. This first chapter was indeed very good and definitely raised the expectations. Unfortunately, later on, I felt the quality of the content lowered and, with it, my final evaluation of this title. Some concepts, indeed, are not clearly explained. For example, generators are presented as functions that instead of executing and returning a single value, send back one or more values in a sequence. I do not agree with this, since a generator function is a function that has at least a yield statement in its body and that returns a generator object.

So a good book, but I would definitely suggest another two titles to any Pythonist interested in advanced topics. These two titles cover more terrain and in a much clearer way:

Hmmm..

OK... 15 Reviews total so far, 12 of them- all 5* on Jan 4, release day. Imagine the coincidence :).

And yes, I actually DO own the book. It is a decent book among a crowded shelf of business management self-help books. Not worth the 5* sweep though.

A comprehensive, cohesive, and cost-effective methodology to achieve breakthrough results

In Leading Change, James O'Toole suggests that much (most?) of the resistance to change initiatives is the result of what he so aptly characterizes as "the ideology of comfort and the tyranny of custom." Roger Connors and Tom Smith fully agree. In a previous collaboration, The Oz Principle, they explain how to get desired results through individual and organizational accountability. They introduce "Steps to Accountability," a sequence of actions: See It (i.e. recognize what must be done), Own It (i.e. make an investment in as well as a commitment to getting it done), Solve It (i.e. recognize and eliminate barriers with whatever resources may be needed), and Do It (i.e. producing the right results in the right way, as promised). Connors and Smith also suggest that people tend to live and work (most of the time) either above or below "The Line" that divides accountable behavior from behavior that is not.

As they note, "We use the term `result,' rather than `goal' because result implies that either you will achieve something or that you have already achieved it. In contrast, `goal' suggests that you would like to have something happen, but might not accomplish it. A goal tends to be hopeful and directional, but not absolute." In this context, I reminded of what Thomas Edison observed long ago: "Vision without execution is hallucination." Apparently the Yoda agrees: "Do or do not. There is no try."

Connors and Smith devote Part One (Chapters 1-5) to explaining how to create a Culture of Accountability, define the results to be achieved, take effective action to produce them, identify core believes that guide and direct behavior, provide experiences that support efforts, and reinforce results to sustain their beneficial impact. In Part Two (Chapters 6-10), they explain how to align cultural values with change initiatives, apply effective three Culture Management Tools they recommend (i.e. focused feedback, focused storytelling, celebration of incremental progress), and three skills needed to move the culture from where it has been to where it should be (i.e. Lead the Change, Respond to the Feedback, and Be Facilitative). Obviously, it would be a fool's errand to adopt and then attempt to apply all of Connors and Smith's recommendations. It remains for each reader to select what is most relevant and responsive to her or his needs and those of her or his organization.

With regard to buy-in of the plan, once formulated, Connors and Smith suggest and then discuss Five Principles of Full Enrollment (Pages 196-213):

1. Start with accountability
2. Get people ready for the change.
3. Begin with the top and intact teams.
4. Establish a process control and keep it honest.
5. Design for maximum involvement.

Those who need additional assistance with achieving full (or at least maximum) enrollment, I highly recommend John Kotter's A Sense of Urgency and his more recent book, Buy-In: Saving Your Good Idea from Getting Shot Down, co-authored with Lorne A. Whitehead. For supplementary readings, I also highly recommend Dean Spitzer's Transforming Performance Measurement: Rethinking the Way We Measure and Drive Organizational Success and Enterprise Architecture As Strategy: Creating a Foundation for Business Execution, co-authored by Jeanne W. Ross, Peter Weill, and David Robertson.

I was really hoping to see something new and insightful here but as I read through each page in anticipation, nothing ever developed. this is the same old stuff in a new cover. nothing new here. Seems to me to be the operating model of most authors - write a book, wait a few years - update with a new cover. Smith and Connors need some new ideas.

As good as, sometimes better than, the 1st edition

I own the first edition and used it so much the book literally fell apart, partly due to cheap binding but mostly the repetitive flipping back and forth to dozens of bookmarked pages with useful technical info. I'm not a musician but as a computer programmer for 20+ years I have read more books of a technical nature than the law should allow, and on that basis I can honestly say this is the best tech book I have ever read. It's been a fantastic introduction to electronic music production, with clear enough explanations of concepts that I never felt intimidated or "talked down to" but more than enough in-depth material that I could take my newfound obsession with music production just as far as I wanted. The included CD was particularly helpful, with a full track in each of the genres covered by the book, with the author breaking in with at least 20 minutes of narrative on each, explaining the tools and methods used in production of the track. This was crucial to me because I don't think it's possible to learn music by simply reading words. Being able to listen to "before" and "after" versions of a compressed kick loop gelled perfectly with the compression tips and tricks discussed in the book.

Finally, a book that ties all the loose ends

I haven't been able to put this book down since receiving it from Amazon. Wow. I've bought quite a few books on music theory, production and mixing techniques, programming guides, etc, in addition to reading all the major electronic music mags out there (EQ, EM, Keyboard, Sound on Sound, Future Music, etc). Basically all that yielded was a lot of disparate information that seemed helpful but you have no idea how it all ties together. This book is the solution to that. I'm not sure I would recommend this book for an absolute beginner...it could be pretty heavy if you're unfamiliar with music (esp electronic music) terminolgy. However, if you have an interest in electronic music (not just dance music) and you're one of those people who has read music production books and routinely reads the music mags, this is the book for you. Trust me, you'll find yourself saying "Oh, *that's* how that works" and you'll start to see how everything fits together. I found this especially true in the "Basic Synthesis" and "Programming Theory" chapters. You can do a thousand tutorials in Computer Music Magazine to program a synth without ever understanding why or what you're doing. This book helps you understand the underlying concepts of waveforms, oscillators, envelopes, etc. There are fantastic tips on sound design and how to create your own unique "sound". Indeed, there is a great discussion on sound itself and the physics that are employed. There is also a chapter devoted to different genres of dance music, everything from trance to hip-hop to house. Perhaps one of the more useful tips is a typical "map" of a club-ready dance track. I could go on and on, just get the book if any of this sounds interesting to you. The price is very reasonable and there's a CD included with examples and software trials. In fact, my only complaint about the book is that I wish it indicated the exact file names on the CD when it references them. You can usually figure it out, but it would be quicker to have the actual file name listed. All in all, I don't think you'll find a more comprehensive book for modern electronic musicians. It'll make you a better informed, and perhaps even a better, musician. And that is the endgame, after all, isn't it?

Holy cow, this book rocks

First off, the title of this book is a little (okay, a lot) misleading. From the title, you would think it would be a light-hearted, casual intro to dance music. This is not the case. This book is like a massive compendium of every single concept you would ever want to know about dance music, or anything like unto it. The first pages are all about sculpting sounds from waveforms, and it's not easy reading! As a matter of fact, that's my only criticism of this book - so much of it was over my head. But what the author lacks in his ability to explain concepts to complete newbie/morons (like me), he more than makes up for with his vast amount of knowledge, and the breadth of the subjects in the book. This really is EVERYTHING you could ever want to know about dance music - how audio works, how synth programming works, dance music trends, effects, etc.

And the author doesn't just tell you the "how", he tells you the "why". It's a book for both artists and techies alike, which is a hard line to straddle. I really have enjoyed this book, and will no doubt read it again as soon as I'm done. It's opened my eyes to soooooo much!!
