Growing up in a family business gave me the opportunity to learn how to lead via trial and error. However, practice without theory will only get you so far in the business world. Echoing the words of my college mentors and teachers, I decided to return to Santa Barbara City College and complete an Associate Degree in Business Administration with an Emphasis in Management. When the Professor assigned us the book, Leadership: Theory & Practice, I was skeptical when it arrived. It was a thin book and from my good ole' college days (about 10 years ago) a serious textbook was at least 2 inches thick and weight at least 5 to 7lbs. But the ole' saying goes, "Times They Are A-Changing" and so are the academic textbooks. Although the book was thin and light (thank God) it was filled with dense content, real-life examples, current theories and trends and the online access that accompanied the textbook was superb. Each chapter was filled with relevant insights and progressed via a logical timeline explaining the evolution of Leadership and Management. If you feel that you've reached your glass ceiling within your industry and job, this book is for you! You don't need to go back to school, but if can commit to a chapter a week you'll be empowered with the knowledge you need to remain ahead of your industry and be an example to your co-workers and peers. Great reading...Easy to follow. The only downside to the book was that the book did not stay together. Once I reached the middle of the book, it split and I was always worried I was going to lose pages. Luckily it was a rental and I got to return it.

Macbeth, The Selfish One.

Shakespeare surprises me again with another one of his classics, Macbeth. The story takes place in Scotland, ruled by the Scottish King Duncan. Macbeth, the main character of the play, and Banquo are the Kings generals. They were very successful with defeated two armies, one from Ireland and one from Norway. The king praised his brave generals, but that was enough for Macbeth. He wanted to be king. So he sets his mind to do so. Macbeth is not the only one who wants him to be in power. Lady Macbeth, being his wife wanting the wealth and attention, has the same dream. A dream to have King Duncan murdered. Macbeth stabs Duncan in his sleep, but plan to blame it on the chamberlains. But how do they do it? By getting the chamberlains drunk, so when they wake up the next morning, their memory would be gone. Giving Macbeth the right to assume the kingship. But there is still an obstacle in the way. Banquo is just as worthy to become king as Macbeth is. So what does Macbeth presume to do? He hires three murders to kill Banquo to assure he becomes the king of Scotland. The murders were also ordered to kill Banquo son, Fleance, but he escapes into the night before they could reach him. Macbeth’s rage grows inside, as he is still afraid his kingship is in danger. The Macduff and Prince Malcom, family of King Duncan, finds out about Macbeth’s whereabouts from Fleance, they want to challenge Macbeth’s forces. Macduff and Prince Malcom’s forces were much stronger against Macbeth’s. Macduff approached Macbeth, then proceeds to kill and then behead Macbeth, giving the power over to the Prince. Shakespeare gives us examples of tragedy throughout this whole play. Macbeth showed selfishness and greed, giving us a life lesson to appreciate the things we have and have to come to us in the future.

Stick with the original

This book has two parts, one written by Shakespeare (5 stars!) and one written by Mr. McCarthy, who purports to make the story of Macbeth more accessible to modern readers. However, the comparison just doesn't work. McCarthy's writing is juvenile, lowest-common-denominator stuff, replete with typos (get an editor!!) and silly modern usage. Stick with the original Shakespeare!

The play is the thing.

I was at first somewhat wary of this printing. It seemed to be a mass market offering. Yet the price was much less than retail, and Oxford publications have such a good reputation. I was not disappointed.
It has everything I have come to expect and enjoy from Oxford Shakespeare: an excellent introduction that covers all aspects of the play from history to production notes, and challenges actors have and may face. The annotation, footnotes, references, and more are all there. It can be read in total or just the play itself (the annotation providing semantics).
I am no expert on bookbinding or paper. With that said, the jacket and binding seem to be very durable. The paper, although not stated (that I could find) as "acid-free" is certainly of higher quality than the newsprint paper currently popular with many publishers. Unless you are looking for a "quick-read, throw-away" I feel confident you will not be disappointed.

This book did not disappoint as it contained much of the same information as the Operations class I took. It was a great way for me to review what I learned, plus get my hands dirtier in AWS.

If you want to learn about AWS and its offerings, I highly recommend this book. It's suitable for beginners to cloud technology provided they have some basic system administration background, and some networking experience wouldn't hurt either. You'll learn about the popular AWS services, what they do, and how to use them. You'll also learn about some of the not-so-well-known, but useful, AWS services too.

Yeah, there are some sentences that are mis-worded but it really doesn't take away from the content.

There is a huge overlap between what I learned in AWS Operations training and what I read in this book. Do not misunderstand me, however. This is not a substitute for formal training, nor is it an official study guide for the certification, but I believe it will be helpful in preparing for my certification exam later this year.

Honest and Balanced Approach

This book reads like an honest, Christian approach to the topic, in which authors have carefully studied the various issues of (1) homosexuality in scripture, (2) concerns regarding legal issues, and (3) challenges and findings in counseling. Unlike what one reviewer has suggested, the authors do not represent only one church denomination. But they are all Christians seeking to better understand the subject. Some of the authors who have published books sold by Amazon in related areas include Richard Davidson (Flame of Yahweh: Sexuality in the Old Testament), Robert Gagnon (The Bible and Homosexual Practice: Texts and Hermeneutics), Stanton Jones (Ex-Gays?: A Longitudinal Study of Religiously Mediated Change in Sexual Orientation), Nicholas Miller (The Religious Roots of the First Amendment: Dissenting Protestants and the Separation of Church and State), and Mark Yarhouse (Homosexuality and the Christian: A Guide for Parents, Pastors, and Friends). The last part of the book includes some interesting testimonies by people who have lived with homosexuality in their own lives but have been able to “know,” “behold,” and be “redeemed by” God’s love.

Must read for all bible believing Christians

This is just the book I'd been praying to find. I've been reading materials from various perspectives yet got to the point where I really wanted something biblical, scholarly, understandable, and authored by biblical scholars from various Christian faiths. Yes this book is scholarly, readable, and the articles aren't just SDA; other bible believing Christian authors are well represented. The editors have done a thorough job with four sections of relevant articles: 1. theological issues/biblical, 2. legal issues, 3. counseling issues, and 4. testimonies. The first section on theological issues stays true to the bible and so far I haven't seen anything else published this thorough. I do not get a sense of any critical, judgmental tone. Just true to what God's word says. Knowing what the biblical position is helps me keep my own convictions and identity clear yet also realizing and accepting that in this day and age many others see things differently. This book helps grace oriented bible believing Christians remain true to God's will. I believe it will help me not lose my own convictions of God's holiness and biblical principles while I continue to socialize, love and accept others who share very different viewpoints.

Cervantes "Other" Famous Novel

It can be a curse for an author to have a magnus opus because it can overshadow their other great works. As you hear Cervantes' name, pictures of knights errant, comical squires, and "giant" windmills instantly pop into your mind (you just can't help it!). About the Author
George A. Steiner is one of the leading pioneers in the development of university curriculums, research, and scholarly writings in the field of business, government, and society. In 1983 he was the recipient of the first Sumner Marcus Award for distinguised achievement in the field by the Social Issues in Management Division of the Academy of Management. In 1990 he received the Distinguished Educator Award, given for the second time by the Academy of Management. After receiving his B.S. in business administration at Temple University, he was awarded an M.A. in economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Illinois. He is the author of many books and articles. Two of his books received "book-of-the-year" awards. In recognition of his writings, Temple Univesity awarded him a Litt.D. honorary degree. Professor Steiner has held top-level positions in the federal government and in industry, includuing corporate board directorships. Past president of the Academy of Management and co-founder of The California Management Review, he is Harry and Elsa Kunin Professor of Business and Society and Professor Management, Emeritus, Anderson School, UCLA.

John F. Steiner is Professor of Management at California State University, Los Angeles. He received his B.S. from Southern Oregon State College and received an M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Arizona. He has coauthored two other books with George A. Steiner, Issues in Business and Society, and Casebook for Business, Government, and Society. He is also the author of Industry, Society, and Change: A Casebook. Professor Steiner is a former chair of the Social Issues in Management Division of the Academy of Management and former chair of the Department of Management at California State University, Los Angeles.

Can only install on one device!

Do not purchase the e-book version of this book unless you only need it on one device.
I have multiple devices that I keep my books on so I have access to them wherever I am at.
This book will only install on 1 device at a time, and no, you cannot even read it on the kindle cloud if it is installed on anything else.

Don't worry though, you have the option to purchase the book again for another device!

Do not get on Kindle

Waste of money getting this on Kindle. I can't read it on my Kindle, my Kindle for iPhone, or online at cloud.kindle.com on my PC! The book only works on my Kindle for iPad (probably, I would hope the Kindle Fire too but I dont have one to test). The landscape and usability is horrid.

Aside from that the book is easy to read, quite biased, but who isn't expecting that when getting a text book these days.

Wow! Everyone should read this book

This was probably my favorite book in the MBA curriculum. Fascinating reading with relevant historical information that broadens the readers view of Business, Government, and Society's roles in acheiving change. Each chapter ends with an interesting case study that calls on the reader to expand their natural thought process. Each week my class discussed one of the cases, which inevitably led to heated debates. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in societal issues and government.

About the Author
The author is a Professor of Chemistry at Tennessee Technological University where he has taught since 1989. With a Ph.D. in Organometallic Chemistry from Virginia Tech and post-docs at University of Cincinnati and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the author has enjoyed working in the fields of organo-transition metal chemistry and nuclear medicine. He holds two patents for the Re-188 isotope generator and has published numerous papers on transition metals with a focus on ligands. Currently, he loves working with his 8-10 research undergraduates synthesizing new compounds. He is married to a lovely wife and the proud father of three sons.

concise and easy to understand

Prof. Lisic provides a great concise and easy to understand introduction to coordination chemistry and basic inorganic chemistry principles. Even at the graduate level this book serves as a useful reference when in need of a quick refresher.
