CHARCOAL MADE EASY

Honestly, I hated charcoal but this way it's like painting and shading I don't hear the nasty scraping anymore! - MY biggest PROBLEM. This Book was extremely informative, and the attention to detail is amazing. Definitely recommend to artists.

Not enough information

It was ok , I wouldnt pay 20 dollars for a 60 page book , I got the kindle edition. I still had questions, I emailed the author but got no reply. Some of the ideas were good in it but I think it should have gone into more detail also more than just one example.

Beginning charcoal painting

This book is wonderful. I really like the style he has adapted for painting with charcoal. I agree with an earlier reviewer that this needs more examples. I wouldn't mind seeing a DVD or YouTube videos on this technique.

Excellent Ultrasound Manual for Busy EM Doc

I am an "older" ED physician for whom ultrasound usage in the ED is a valuable work in progress. I work as an attending physician at a busy NYC ED and I would classify myself as an "intermediate sonographer."

This is an ideal guide for emergency and ICU ultrasound:

The Good:

* Easy to use and locate topics
* Easily accessible language making it easily digestible in a fast-moving environment.
* Layout is perfect and diagrams beautifully presented: quality diagrams and sonographic images make one want to use it.
* Language simple and presented by authors who really know their subject matter.
* Ideal pocket-size.
* Ideal for beginner, intermediate and advanced ultrasonographers, each of whom will draw enormous value from this handbook, as I do.

The Bad:

Nothing noticed.

This is a fabulous addition to the library of ED ultrasound books available, and, in my humble opinion, the best of those currently available. For anyone serious about developing their ED ultrasonographic skill-set, this book is the ideal guide for emergency and ICU ultrasound and is a "must have" for anyone serious about enhancing their US procedures. It is working wonders with mine!

Great Handbook

Great book that targets both EM and CC physicians working in busy ED. Algorithm chapters are a nice addition. Compact and easy to carry around. Great addition to the ultrasound community. Suggestion of iPad app with future editions is a great idea. Compliments to authors.

Maya Angelou was raised in Stamps, Arkansas. I've been a huge fan of Maya Angelou for decades now. I have had the great honor of having seen Maya Angelou speak twice before a live audience... She was a phenomenal speaker!!

I recently read the hardback edition of Mom & Me & Mom by Maya Angelou. This book captured my interested due to the unique relationship between mothers and daughters and also because, I wanted to learn more about the relationship Maya Angelou had with her mother.

I thought Mom & Me & Mom by Maya Angelou was overall a good read and would recommend this book to others. My only major complaint is that many of the life events that Maya Angelou discusses in this particular book have also been discussed in her other books. So, I only learned a few new things about her life that I didn't know before, which was disappointing to me as I wasn't expecting so much of Mom & Me & Mom to be a rehash of what I'd already read in her other books.

All mothers deserve a thank you

Expected a lot more from Ms. Angelou, but this is not "I Know Why a Caged Bird Sings." If you've read any of her other books, in "Mom" you'll come across similar passages. It's a simple tribute to her mother, written in simple declarative sentences. I got the feeling she wrote it because she felt she owed her mother a 'thank you.' All mothers deserve a thank you. It's clear that her mother's love and support enabled Ms. Angelou to share her talents with the world.

Not quite what I expected.

This is my first book by Maya Angelou. It was a quick read (one afternoon in about 3 hours) and I enjoyed the story of her relationship with her mother. Angelou's mother is a very colorful character and is what makes this book so interesting. I have only really ever just heard about Maya Angelou and it was very interesting to me to read about her life which was very different than what I thought it was. The only problem I had with the book was that I felt there were large gaps in the story- she seemed to just jump from one thing to another and I would have to re-read to figure out if she was changing subjects, or jumping to another moment in time, or what. It wasn't quite what I was expecting. I think I was expecting something a little more in depth. However, it was an enjoyable read. I will now look to read her "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" because I've been reading about how much better it is than this. Linda Muse

Buy when you are in school!

I purchased this reference guide as I was preparing for my NCIDQ exam to become a licenensed designer. While there was pertinant information I wished that someone had reccomended that I purchase it as I entered into design school.

There are many useful on Human anthropometrics, the use of space and environmental systems. However, there isn't much information on the architectural aspects of interior design (nominal lumber sizes/ building products & materials etc.)

Francis Ching (or his editor) is very good at laying out his books so that design professionals can easily read through, or can use them to reference when looking for specific information.

A great addition the the library of Interior Designers and students.

This book is a great book. no color pictures but only scetches. This book is about scale, orientation, symmetry, proportion, shape of objects and interiors etc etc. You get the idea. I recommend you buy this book.

Your mileage may vary.

Why did I spend less than 10 minutes reviewing the contents of this book? I picked it up at the library to review as a potential purchase as a resource in my own collection. Immediately upon turning the pages, I realized that this book was not directed towards professionals who have experience in the field of architecture/interiors, but for students and recent graduates. It was easy to see that all of the information contained in the book was that which I had long ago learned through schooling and professional practice.

If you are a student, this will give you a great opportunity to get into the meat of the profession (specifically interiors), but if you've already accumulated some experience, this might be worth very little.

Why did I give it 3 stars? Because I believe that Ching's two other books ("Building Construction Illustrated" and "Building Codes Illustrated") are exceedingly more useful and valuable, regardless of your status (student or professional) and of your profession (interiors or architecture).

About the Author
Michael Main is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He earned his BS, MS, and PhD at Washington State University.

Walter Savitch is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at the University of California at San Diego. His interests include complexity theory, formal language theory, computational linguistics, and the development of computer science education materials, including several leading textbooks. He holds a PhD in mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley.

Challenging yet rewarding!

I thought this book was great. Yes, others may say it was very difficult to get through (i agree) but with persistence there is a big reward. The book provides full implementation details for a bunch of data structures and even sections devoted to the STL and iterators. I don't believe the implementation in this book was meant to be compiled under MVC++'s IDE. The back of the book provides a website containing a free compiler (GNU) to download along with other tools like the emacs editor (That runs on MS Windows). I have never experienced any problem compiling any of the example code under this free compiler (and using MVC++ for the code in the book is like trying to kill an ant with a shotgun anyways). This book was also not meant to teach basic C++ coding but rather to teach the concept of data structures (which should apply to various programming lang. anyways). If you want to learn how to code in C++, I recommend Deitel & Deitel "C++ How to program". However this book does teach some areas of basic C++ coding like the importance of the const keyword, using templates, and the new and delete operators. This book also includes some run-time analysis for various algorithms.

Suprisingly Good Text.

After reading the poor reviews I felt bad having to buy this book for a university level data structures course. However, after using this book for a short time I really grew to like it. It is an excellent introduction to classes and OOP in addition to data structures. It picks up right around where most introductory C++ texts leave off. I found the authors explanations to be very clear and the examples to be very relavant to the topics in each chapter. The author seems to build on topics chapter after chapter so it is hard to forget what has already been learned. This is one of the few text books that I am going to keep for future reference.

Not as bad as I thought

I more or less liked this book. Upon reading many of the reviews before purchasing the book I was somewhat discouraged from buying it. In the end, I really had no choice since this was the book required for the course I am taking. But, in general it is a very good book. The material itself that is covered isn't the simplest to get a grasp of. You need patience and plenty of hard work. It covers a lot of major topic areas, from linked lists, to sets, to stacks, to queues, to trees, to graphs. Also dedicated chapters introduce and develop upon the concepts of recursion and inheritance. And there are two chapters dedicated to sorting an searching algorithms. The author assumes that you have a relatively good grasp of object oriented concepts. This is not an introduction to C++ book. You should have good groundings in C++ especially with the use of pointers and working with dynamic memmory. Also, if you can think recursively you will be greatly rewarded since most of the examples in later parts of the book rely on this mind twisting yet important concept. If you are using VC++ make sure to use #pragma warning(disable:4786) when working with STL multisets it will save you from the 100 or so compiler warning messages you will get.

About the Author

Deborah R. Harden is a Professor in the Department of Geology at San Jose State University, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in California geology and Earth-surface processes. Her particular interests are in landscape-forming processes, rivers, the effects of faults on streams, human impacts on watersheds, and California geology.

Before coming to San Jose State University, Dr. Harden worked as a geologist for a private engineering consulting firm and as a hydrologist for the U.S. Geological Survey. She has a Ph.D. from the University of Colorado and B.S. and M.S. degrees from Stanford University, all in geology.

Dr. Harden has had the privilege and opportunity of visiting and studying geology and landscapes in many parts of the world, both professionally and with her family.

The ONLY up-to-date textbook on California geology

Deborah Hardin's textbook on California geology is superior to all previous texts inasmuch as she is the first to utilize the theory of plate tectonics to provide a unified framework for her overall exposition. Instead of being bombarded with an encyclopedic but chaotic assemblage of rock types and unconnected microprocesses, the reader is treated to a consistent and comprehensive picture of how California came to be that hangs together remarkably well.
Harden utilized the recent research of countless other geologists to put together this book, and her hard work has paid off. She includes several chapters that provide a conceptual overview of geologic principles, then goes on in successive sections to describe how various forces and processes related ultimately to plate tectonics have been responsible for the evolution of various distinctive landforms and geomorphic regions of California. She also includes a final chapter that is a stand-alone summary version of the "geological history of California." Throughout the book, she makes clear again and again how a clear understanding of the various ways that tectonic plates can interact is absolutely fundamental to understanding how California has come into existence over the past several hundred million years. It's a fascinating story, and Harden's text will help anyone willing to read carefully and study a bit to learn the basics of California geology.
As an added bonus, Harden has included several sections that are linked to present-day environmental hazards, most notably those related to the constant threat of earthquakes in the Golden State. Such information is, of course linked directly to the geology of the state that she has described and explained so well.
The illustrations and diagrams re not terribly elaborate, but they are helpful and reasonably plentiful. Also included are some small-sized versions of the standard California geology and fault maps.
The main drawback to this publication is its astronomical price. This is hardly Harden's fault, however, as high prices seem to be the unfortunate standard for college textbooks these days.

Not bad. Needs some polishing.

I bought this textbook to study for the California section of the PG exam. It definitely helped. I enjoyed the final section that presented concepts from previous chapters in a grand-scheme California geologic history. It's not state-of-the-art research, but it's good enough to help wrap your head around the big picture without getting bogged down in too many details.

Several figures were pulled from other sources and didn't list acronyms or explain how they related to the subject. They looked good but didn't help understand the topic. I also felt like information about some topics was scattered throughout the book; so I really needed to read the whole thing to pull it all together in my mind.

I would recommend to anyone with an introductory geology education or a professional who needs to brush up on their regional geology.

Finally found a book explaining how my state was made. I've been looking in bookstores for several years with no success, so I turned to the internet, found this title right away. It's pricey, as are all textbooks, but it answers all my questions (at least, what science has found, so far). It's also a perfect fit with my California geography textbook, approaching each area through the same province names, descriptions. Now I have both a physical and geographical understanding of California. Also, I was amazed that Amazon sent it out "regular" delivery and it arrived within two days of my ordering it!
