About the Author
Dr. Bob Moorehead has been the pastor of Overlake Christian Church in Kirkland, Washington for over 25 years. He has seen the church grow from 90 people to a congregation of over 6000 today. His very active and successful ministry there emphasizes evangelism, teaching and counseling. Dr. Moorehead holds a Ph.D. from California School of Theology as well as an undergraduate degree from Phillips University and a Bachelor of Divinity degree from The Graduate Seminary. He is the author of 9 other books. Bob and his wife Glenita live in Kirkland, Washington. They have three grown children: Darla, Tammi, and Jeff and they enjoy nine grandchildren.

This book is full of monologues that will make you laugh, cry and empathize with those who are willing to take a stand for Jesus Christ. Each and every monologue written here can be used to motivate and challenge others into a deeper walk with their Lord.

Devout Christians should love this book!

This book is best described as a collection of Christian-themed essays or sermonettes. Someone posted an excerpt from the very last essay in the book, “The Paradox of our Age,” online which caught my attention and compelled me to buy the book. I thought I was buying a philosophy or social-commentary book but that’s not what this book is. This book is little more than well-written cheerleading for the Christian church. I almost returned the book unread but I did want to read the rest of the excerpt I’d found online and, as an open-minded nonbeliever, I read the whole book in hopes the author could present a cogent pro-religious point of view that might change my mind. But I read nothing that changed my mind and what I read actually reaffirmed my non-belief in religion and the church.

The reason this book reinforces my own status as nonbeliever is the (all too typical) language used. First I found little information about personal growth or enlightenment. Secondly I only found the word “love” mentioned in two of the essays. There are references that are clearly intolerant and homophobic but the worst, in my view, are the heavy-handed and too-frequent references to conflict and violence. He over uses terms and phrases like: “hatred,” “sin,” “battle,” “conquering,” “uncompromising,” “battle scarred,” “enemy,” “blood of martyrs,” “victorious,” ”the winner,” and it goes on and on. This is the very language that turned me away from the church in the first place! I’m not looking for a fight.

If you’re a devout, church-going Christian this book is for you. If you are of a different faith or a nonbeliever there’s little here for you ---except that last essay, “The Paradox of our Age.” “The Paradox of our Age” is superb and spot-on for our time ---and it contains no references to god, Jesus or the church.

As a chemical engineering researcher, the Merck Index has been with me my entire career. Anyone out there who is remotely involved with biopharmaceuticals, galvanized plating, trigonal planar Lithium hydride battery formulations, or just plain ole kitchen cabinet cleaners. Great Reference - BEWARE MISSING PAGES

This is an indispensable reference book. I use it daily. I recently upgraded to this most recent version. I have had it about 3 weeks. I went to look up quinine today and couldn't find the Q's. Then I had a brief moment of disbelief and I recited the alphabet to myself to make sure I wasn't missing something. Then, I noticed my copy skipped from page 1376 to page 1425! Fortunately I can still exchange the book, but beware....count your pages when you get this book.

Otherwise, great book. And the included CD-ROM provides a little extra searching power. I would prefer that the CD interface and printouts were a little cleaner.

Why this is a great book for kids

This is an interesting story about a beautiful peacock - the entertainer of the animals in an african jungle who loses her joy and pride when her feathers are mischievously stolen away through magic by a very jealous and envious little yellow bird. When I read this story to little children, they are captivated and cant wait to see what will happen next. I ask them questions throughout and get them to contribute their opinions. This book is a great read because it encourages the chidren to think critically and to learn a few things about nature. The only down side about the book is that after the children hear the story, they will want you to read it over and over again. :)

Preface

This textbook is an introduction to fluid dynamics. The first nine chapters form the basis for the first sophomore level course in fluid dynamics. In addition, Chapters 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 form the basis for a second course in fluid dynamics. The main prerequisite for the book is a basic knowledge of calculus and physics.

Physical phenomena, and by extension fluid flow, are governed by the same basic laws. Therefore, particular topics can be deduced from the more general framework provided by the laws of nature. For this reason, whenever possible the material in this textbook is presented from a general, deductive viewpoint. This approach is also consistent with the needs of modern engineering analysis and design, and is achieved without sacrificing the quality or quantity of the discussion of "classical" fluid flow phenomena.

Traditionally, students consider fluid dynamics to be a difficult topic because of its mathematical nature and the apparent complexity of its concepts. Often, whether in class or textbooks, the material is presented as a collection of seemingly unrelated concepts, thus making it more difficult for students to fully comprehend the material. Here, the material is organized in a manner that avoids this confusion; similar themes are grouped and discussed together.

Some of the unique features of this book include (a) the point of view of the presentation, (b) the thematic organization of the material, and (c) the introduction of ideas from computational and experimental fluid dynamics. The material and concepts are demonstrated and reinforced through examples and problems for each section and chapter.

Since most concepts in fluid dynamics are quite mathematical, one of the appendixes reviews the basic mathematics required for the study of fluid dynamics. In my experience, this chapter prepares students for the more mathematically rigorous parts of the material.

The book is divided into three parts: Theory

The material in this part is divided into the following categories: (a) introduction, (b) conservation laws (c) fluid kinematics, and (d) fluid dynamics (for finite and differential control volumes). Since the material is presented from a general point of view, in which the universality of the laws of nature is stressed, Hydrostatics is not discussed in a separate chapter but is presented as a special case of the momentum equation in Chapter 2.

Irrespective of the driving forces or dynamic conditions that induce flow, the motion and deformation of fluid particles are characterized by simple kinematic principles. Therefore, in Chapter 4, fluid flow is defined using purely kinematic arguments without reference to the dynamic effects.

Following the kinematics of fluid flow, Chapter 5 introduces and emphasizes the governing laws and constitutive relations. The concept of the constitutive behavior of fluids and therefore of the viscosity of fluids follows naturally from the discussion. Concepts such as laminar flow, turbulent flow, and non-Newtonian fluids are also presented within this framework. An entirely new section on boundary conditions completes the theoretical description of fluid systems. Analysis

Following the theoretical and mathematical description of fluid systems, this part deals with the analysis of fluid problems. This step is also consistent with engineering design methodology. In Chapters 6, 7, and 8 and in Chapters 12 and 13, various solution procedures such as dimensionless analysis, analytic, experimental, and numerical solutions are introduced and applied to fundamental problems. Traditional concepts such as internal and external flows are presented in a separate chapter under a common theme dealing with the use of combined analytical and experimental methods in fluid dynamics. Special Topics

Finally, special topics such as ideal, inviscid flow, compressible flow, and dynamics of rotating fluids are reserved for separate chapters. This avoids unnecessary confusion about the relation of these topics to the fundamental theory of fluid dynamics. Instructors can select, at will, the topics to cover in their course.

About the Author

ANDREAS ALEXANDROU is currently a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Director of the Semisolid Metal Processing Center. He received the B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering (1982) from the American University of Beirut while on a U.S. AID/Fullbright scholarship. At the University of Michigan he earned the M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering (1983) and Civil Engineering (1985), and the Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering (1986). His research interests and contributions are in basic fluid flows, fluid mechanic applications in material processing, and microgravity and wake flows. He has well over 70 scientific publications and numerous presentations to his credit, and has co-authored an advanced textbook on viscous fluid flow. He received the 1992 WPI Board of Trustee's Award for Outstanding Teaching, the 1993 Morgan Distinguished Instructorship Award, and the 1996 Russell M. Searle Teacher of the Year Award in Mechanical Engineering.

A very good introduction to fluids

The clarity of the writing and the step by step progression from general conservation laws, to integral and differential equations, to solvable problems, make this a great introduction to fluid mechanics for physicists and engineers. In addition to learning about fluids the reader will get lots of practice analyzing problems and applying mathematics that they have "learned" elsewhere. If you didn't learn it then, you will have to figure it out now, but luckily this material is exactly the kind of stuff you need to connect those abstract mathematical skills to the real world.
The first printing of this first edition, has too many errors, but most of them have obvious corrections. Hopefully, later printings will correct most of these.
I just asked the students in my class for which this is the text and they all agreed that they like the text, really liked the example problems and were sometimes confused by things that later turn out to be misprints.

Knock-off book printed in black & white on low grade paper.

My rating refers to the quality of the item delivered, not the content of the textbook itself, read on for details.

I ordered this book through Amazon.com, LLC hoping to avoid the many low quality counterfeit textbooks shipped by many third party sellers. When I opened the box, the packing slip said "Principles of Fluid Mechanics, [Hardcover]" but the textbook was just what I wanted to avoid. The cover was flimsy paper, the entire content of the textbook was printed in black and white on what looked like extremely cheap recycled paper.

I thought it had to be an error, so I called Amazon and requested an exchange. Lo and behold, the replacement item was the exact same low quality item. I ended up paying $50 LESS to get an actual hardcover from a third party seller on the site. I hope Amazon.com, LLC will look into their supplier and fix the issue soon. Until then, they are charging $150 for a product that is NOT as described.

William Turner was born at Kilmallock, Ireland. He received his education at Mungret College in Limerick, at the Royal University of Ireland, and at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1893. The following year he began his career as a professor at St. Paul's Seminary, in Saint Paul, Minnesota. He later became professor of philosophy at the Catholic University of America. In 1919, Turner was appointed the sixth Bishop of Buffalo, New York, by Pope Benedict XV. He received his episcopal consecration on the following year from Cardinal James Gibbons, with Bishops Denis J. O'Connell and Michael Joseph Curley serving as co-consecrators. He began Catholic Charities in 1924, and established more than 30 new parishes during his administration. He died at age 65.

At the time the book was originally published, it supplied a long-felt want in Catholic colleges and seminaries. It was considered a solid and carefully condensed volume, written in an attractive style, and not tainted throughout with the special views of the author, or as having failed to do justice to some particular epoch. Father Turner, in the preface to this work, tells why: "Of the text-books that are at present available for use in the lecture-room, some dismiss the scholastic period with a paragraph ; others, while dealing with it more sympathetically, treat it from the point of view of German transcendentalism."

In setting forth the succession of schools and systems of philosophy, Father Turner has given to Scholasticism a presentation adequate to its importance in the history of speculative thought. To the much-neglected period of Scholasticism, Father Turner devotes nearly one-third of his volume. He presents to the reader a galaxy of Schoolmen whose thought and genius deserve to be perpetuated. Modern Philosophy, which is generally said to take its rise about the middle of the fifteenth century, is brought down to the end of the nineteenth century.

Father Turner's "History of Philosophy " was and still is an excellent work, and is worthy of the high praise it received at the time. Throughout the work, care is taken to indicate the sources which may be conveniently consulted by students, and at the end of each section critical suggestions are offered to enable the reader to form a judgment as to the value of each successive contribution to philosophical thought.
