About the Author

Merle C. Potter, PhD, is the author or coauthor of The Mechanics of Fluids, Fluid Mechanics, Thermal Sciences, Differential Equations, Advanced Engineering Mathematics, Fundamentals of Engineering, and numerous papers in fluid mechanics and energy. He is Professor Emeritus of mechanical engineering at Michigan State University.
Craig W. Somerton, PhD, is an associate professor of mechanical engineering at Michigan State University. He has published in the International Journal of Mechcanical Engineering Education and is a past recipient of the SAE Ralph R. Teetor Education Award.

So many problems, helped me out a lot in preparing for exams and understanding the concepts of the material. It explains things clearly and kind of just gets to the point where as the textbook has a lot of jargon. The solutions are well thought and laid out.

Great new approach to the AC universe

The modern day series of the Assassin's Creed novels caught me by a pleasant surprise.

First, the novel is written in third person and I enjoyed the firt person view of AC:Forsaken, Black Flag and Unity better than the third person of the novels depicting Altair's and Ezio's adventures and the last AC:Underworld. But this approach suited the novel better - enabling mixing the view of most of the characters, past and present, in a very cohesive and well flowing way. Although Owen is the main protagonist, having the POV of his ancestors as well as his companions made the story richer. I especially enjoyed the way personalities of the present and past day characters mingled and came out during the goings on.

Second, although the primary audience is the young adults - and so the characters of the book are what I would call older children, their personalities are shaped by their own experience, or that of the ancestors they got to take part in, so actually the language of the books and the mindets of the protagonists are both believable and enjoyable for us more senior fans of the AC world.

Third - this time there is no game associated with the novel. At first, especially after meeting Monroe, I hoped the book would tie to the AC:Initiates project. That, unfortunately, did not come to pass, but we came to get a glimpse of a known character. Still, lot of the story is taking part in modern day. It ties very subtly (well in the case of AC: Locus not so subtly) but still without flaw (at least one I could spot) - with other stories of the AC universe - especially the comic books.

And last, but not least, the introduction of the animus technology and the Memory corridor, and syncing and desyncing with the ancestors. I never really thought about these parts of the game too much, but the book includes them in the story in very fluent and natural way, making me think of how come I never speculated on these aspects of the game.

Overall I would highly suggest this novel to any fan of the series, especially one who cares more for the overall story than the actual slaying of the enemies. And for comic book fans I recomend to read this novel before starting the AC: Locus series, as they tie togerther, the Locus following in the story where the novel ended.

New to Assassin's Creed or a 9 year fan, everyone will enjoy this

My expectations for this this book won't the highest when I ordered this book but this book surpassed them all and proved me wrong. It isn't hard to get pulled into this story and the characters. Kirby did a great job introducing the Animus and how re-living the memories of your ancestors works. I been playing the games since the beginning and never was there a way to really describe how it felt to be in the Animus or when exiting. I found this interesting and showed that Kirby has a great attention to detail. The trip(s) into the Animus were fun to read. The Draft Riots were exciting to read and with the story shifting to one character every chapter you got to see the whole riot and not a section. The amount of detail that is in the book to describe the journey that the characters traveled up and down Manhattan was not missed. I wish there was a better map so I could better follow their runs.
I enjoyed the characters and thought Kirby didn't over do the drama and fighting between them. While Owen could be said to be the main protagonist, the other 5 characters get equal time in the book.

I'm giving it 5 star because it exceeding my expectations and felt it was a solid story but I would like something added in the future.
-Longer story, maybe I read it fast but it felt short. I felt the ending could have been nicely expanded a bit.
-Hard Cover editions with a map with the routes that the characters traveled and historical notes of people, places, and events. This is what Assassin's Creed has always done, even the comics have a back section so you can read more on the history. You can keep an edition $10 but I would pay for a hardcover edition with these additions.

Rudolf Kingslake (1903-2003) was a founding faculty member of the Institute of Optics at The University of Rochester (1929) and remained teaching until 1983. Concurrently, in 1937 he became head of the lens design department at Eastman Kodak until his retirement in 1969. Dr. Kingslake published numerous papers, books, and was awarded many patents. He was a Fellow of SPIE and OSA, and an OSA President (1947-48). He was awarded the Progress Medal from SMPTE (1978), the Frederic Ives Medal (1973), and the Gold Medal of SPIE (1980).

R. Barry Johnson has been involved for over 40 years in lens design, optical systems design, and electro-optical systems engineering. He has been a faculty member at three academic institutions engaged in optics education and research, co-founder of the Center for Applied Optics at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, employed by a number of companies, and provided consulting services. Dr. Johnson is an SPIE Fellow and Life Member, OSA Fellow, and an SPIE President (1987). He published numerous papers and has been awarded many patents. Dr. Johnson was founder and Chairman of the SPIE Lens Design Working Group (1988-2002), is an active Program Committee member of the International Optical Design Conference, and perennial co-chair of the annual SPIE Current Developments in Lens Design and Optical Engineering Conference.

Good foundational work, but not for everyone

If you thumb through this bad boy, you'll notice that there's a lot of raytracing going on. Consequently, this is a great book from which to learn about raytracing, specifically the (y-nu) (or "ynu") paraxial method. I made the effort of setting up a ynu table in Excel and used the equations to trace chief and marginal rays with much success (along with first-order properties such as focal length, F/#, entrance/exit pupil position/radius, et cetera). I then used the computed data and generated a lens drawing with traced rays, all in Excel. A Delano (y-ybar) diagram was inserted next, followed by computation of the Seidel aberration coefficients. Use the book with Excel and you'll find it incredibly useful.

In addition to the raytracing, Kingslake discusses chromatic aberration, primary spectrum and secondary spectrum in detail. Also writes about the Seidel aberrations and how to compute them, using various sample lenses.

A great complement to "A History of the Photographic Lens" and "Optics in Photography," both of which are quite informative regarding lens types and principles.

most comprehensive treatise on lens design

Lens Design Fundamentals, Second Edition, is the most comprehensive treatise to be published on the subject of Lens Design. This book holds a unique place in the optics literature. It adds impressive building blocks to the foundation established by A. E. Conrady in "Applied Optics and Optical Design" and Rudolph Kingslake in "Lens Design Fundamentals, First Edition". Dr. R. Barry Johnson is a disciple of Conrady and Kingslake, and who has a deep background in lens design theory as a Professor of Optics and many years of experience as a practicioner in the real world of lens design. Thus, he is ideally suited to write an up-to-date edition of "Lens Design Fundamentals". This new edition has been extensively rewritten and expanded by about 50% in both text and figures.
Dr. Johnson takes the reader from the work of the lens designer into ray tracing methods and First Order Optics. This is followed by three chapters on aberration theory which provide the foundation for the subsequent chapters which follow on the design of different types of lens systems that form the basis of most modern lenses, including zoom lenses. One entire chapter is devoted to the role of the Stop in lens design. Dr. Johnson also devotes a chapter to Mirror and Catadioptric Systems, an important class of optical system largely neglected in books on Optics. The final chapter is devoted to Automatic Lens Improvement Programs. In this treatise Dr. Johnson stresses the need for an understanding of lens design principles and aberration theory as a prerequisite to obtaining the best solutions from these optimization programs.
The value of Lens Design Fundamentals, Second Edition, is increased immensely by the numerous examples presented throughout as well as by Designer Notes interspersed in each chapter. For its audience this treatise is intended for the beginner through each intermediate level of experience up to and including the expert lens designer. This book will be a very valuable addition to any bookshelf.

One has to get used to Kingslake's terminology. However then, you will find this book really great.
I could find a lot of interesting notes and calculation which I do not find in other optics textbooks.

Changed the way I play guitar

I wanted to take guitar lessons, but did not have the money or time for it. So I walked into Guitar Center and found this book. I was drawn to it because of the six and seven string scales that were taught in there. As a seven string player, it is rare to see books that help with the extended range, so I was very happy to find this.

I have had it for about two months, and play about 4 days a week, for around 3 hours at a time. I have noticed an incredible shift in my playing. My skills have improved dramatically in many different areas. I am faster, more consistent, I see the fret board as a whole instead of just little sections of notes I know. Rusty really opens up the whole guitar, and makes 24 frets available to shred. He makes it fun with the exercises, and they are always mixing it up, so you don't get board running over the same notes. I also am able to play solos like I never have in the past. I can improvise in a way that I could have never imagined.

I would recommend this book to any guitar player looking to shred. It isn't for the casual guitarist who is looking to learn the blues, it is for someone looking to sit down with a metronome and learn how to run up and down the fret board at blistering speeds. \m/ Rock on my friends.

This Book Opens Your Eyes!

RICHNESS OF CONTENT
There are numerous books (and videos) on the subject of scale playing and modes. I have read and viewed several, but Rusty Cooley’s Fretboard Autopsy (book with two DVDs that contain 2-hours of video) is the first I have known to make connections of the modes that have completely escaped my notice previously. I believe, for the most part, this is my fault as I limited my learning of Ionian on the fretboard, and then Dorian, followed by Phyrgian, etc., and how these ‘box’ patterns interlock beside one another. However, Fretboard Autopsy took my comprehension of improvisation two steps further.

First, Rusty did a great job in creating easy-to-remember patterns that would have you work across multiple modes, so that a scale or fingering exercise may have you start on Aeolian (or whatever scale in which you happen to start) and shift vertically into Locrian, Ionian, Dorian, etc., and as you work up and down (or in reverse) horizontally among the strings, which causes you to cover a lot of fretboard territory with some fantastic runs. Obviously, as you work the various melodic patterns and scales you need to visualize what ‘section’ of a mode pattern you are shifting into (since this helps with the overall fretboard visualization concept Rusty had in mind). Now, this is where things really took off.

Rusty demonstrated scale and melodic patterns on the sixth string and then later demonstrated patterns starting on the fifth string. He then clarified how one mode is really part of another mode within the same ‘box’ pattern. For example, if the Ionian scale starts on the sixth string (the first three notes played on that string), and continues down onto the fifth string, fourth string, etc., you will notice that the three notes on the fifth string also are the first three notes of a completely different mode (in this case the Lydian scale is directly under the Ionian scale). Although Rusty never pursued this idea further it became clear very quickly that a new mode started on the fourth string, right under Ionian and Lydian, which is Locrian.

Holy Smokes! There is an actual sequential pattern of modes with their unique ‘box’ shapes that flow horizontally (cascade) one after another and from one string down to the next and in this order: Ionian, (and under that) Lydian, (and under that) Locrian, then Phrygian, Aeolian, Dorian, Mixolydian, and then back to Ionian. Thus, no matter what mode you are playing on any particular string there is a modal pattern that starts directly under it and that continues the pattern before it.

If this is unclear (and excuse my ignorance if some of you knew this and find it ‘old hat’), here is another example. Let’s say that on the sixth string you start your scale playing with the Mixolydian scale by playing the first three notes of the ‘box’ pattern. You then move down onto the fifth string for the next three notes of the ‘box’ pattern, which also are the first three notes of the Ionian scale. And then onto the fourth string you play the next three notes of the Mixolydian scale (which are the second group of notes for Ionian, but also the first group of notes for Lydian).
Now, of course, the patterns interconnect vertically (up and down) the fretboard as well, no matter what string you start on. And so, if you are on the fourth string working the Dorian scale, then obviously the Phrygian pattern (also starting on the fourth string) is right next door, each with their signature ‘box’ pattern. Again, this came as a mild revelation as I always thought of the overall ‘box’ shape concept starting on the sixth string and ending on the first string without considering the shape starting on any other string. Again, that may be my fault as I don’t practice scales (I used to) and tend to ‘figure out’ melodic patterns as I hear them in my head and as I compose music. But it is because of Rusty Cooley’s method of teaching and interlocking the modes with various patterns vertically AND horizontally that the above became lucid.

The book/DVD set also contains several bonus lessons, including exercises and applications for 7-string guitar, a digital ebook version and backing tracks you can download, as well as lifetime membership for online lesson support.

STYLE
Running scales horizontally and vertically along the fretboard can be boring, which is why developing nifty patterns and playing them in different ways are crucial. Rusty does a great job presenting great finger patterns to work scales, and I was surprised at how ‘repetitive’ some of those patterns are as you move vertically across the fretboard, which means very little memorization in many cases as the fingers simply fall into place. For example, a pattern for the Ionian scale (first six notes, three each on strings six and five) repeats as you shift into different modal territory on strings four and three, and then again up the neck into more modal territory for the same shape/pattern on strings two and one.

Now, there is much more to this instructional book/DVD set than the above, but it certainly demonstrates Rusty’s ingenuity in creating easy-to-remember patterned exercises and while the student memorizes and visualizes the modes across the fretboard. In fact, Rusty does make great sense of the guitar neck, making it simpler while demystifying its layout.

And so this whole concept of integrating the modes while developing speed with particular patterns takes on various number combinations, such as 9-9-6 (9 notes on the first two strings, 9 on the next two, then 6 on the last two), single string technique, double string technique, three octave modes, working in reverse, etc., etc. By the end of the lessons you get a sense that you’re the Karate Kid waxing on and waxing off… repeating and repeating (albeit in different ways) to the point that the modes become ingrained and visually obvious no matter where you are on the fretboard.

OVERALL IMPRESSION
If you are unaware of the seven basic modes and their box shapes, then you do have some memorization to do at the beginning of this book. However, if you have a simple grasp of the finger patterns (you don’t have to know much music theory to get proficient throughout these lessons), then you can dig right in and get a quick understanding and appreciation of what Rusty is doing with his teaching ideas and how he’s getting you to link those patterns from one end of the neck to the other. In very little time… within days… you will find fretboard navigation far easier than it once was, allowing you to improvise without hitting a sour note. Certainly the next step would be to match up the modes with appropriate chords (e.g., Dorian played over a minor seventh chord), but Fretboard Autopsy certainly establishes the groundwork to making the most of your soloing. And as John McCarthy stated in the book, “Repetition is the mother of all skill” – thus, as you repeat the lessons in Fretboard Autopsy it becomes apparent how the skills of a shredder develops.

About the Author
Dr. Alan D. Michelson is Professor of Pediatrics and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. He is also the Director of the Center for Platelet Research Studies and the Director of the Thrombosis Program and Anticoagulation Service at Children's Hospital Boston. After receiving his medical degree with honors from the University of Adelaide, Australia in 1974, Dr. Michelson continued his medical and research training on a Fulbright Scholarship at Children’s Hospital Boston, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Harvard Medical School. He is the inventor on two U.S. patents.

Dr. Alan D. Michelson is Professor of Pediatrics and Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. He is also the Director of the Center for Platelet Research Studies and the Director of the Thrombosis Program and Anticoagulation Service at Children's Hospital Boston. After receiving his medical degree with honors from the University of Adelaide, Australia in 1974, Dr. Michelson continued his medical and research training on a Fulbright Scholarship at Children’s Hospital Boston, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Harvard Medical School. About the Author

Philip Rossoni is a commercial glider pilot and has flown as a test pilot, evaluating prototype thermal detection devices for Airborne Research Associates. He volunteers in the Exhibit Hall Interpretation Department at the Museum of Science, Boston, helping museum visitors learn to fly walkalong gliders.

If you only buy one book of paper airplanes this year, of course, it should be one of mine. But, if you're looking to broaden your aerial experience, Philip Rossoni has written "Build and Pilot Your Own Walkalong Gliders".

It's a remarkable volume for it's breadth of flying models, from paper to foam to insect cadavers. Phil walks you through the construction (although not capturing and drying). More importantly, he teaches you how to fly them. With some practice, you'll be easily smashing the Guinness flight duration record for paper airplanes. (Guinness banned this kind of airplane from their records for paper aircraft. )

Mr. Rossoni is an accomplished commercial glider pilot. Few of us in the folded flight world have his depth of experience at the visceral level. I include a couple of planes like this in my book "Fantastic Flight". But here, Phil goes much deeper. There are paper aircraft in this volume, but it's not really a paper airplane book. It's meant to introduce and teach the art of flying a small aircraft on a wave of air generated by the pilot. If that sounds intriguing, this book is for you.

Concepts of Flight

Phil Rossoni has done it again. The author has taken the concepts involved in fight and engineering and made them accessible to the novice builder and aviator. Each glider model that is introduced in the how-to guide is presented with precise instructions detailing construction and explanations of flight design concepts that will further improve the pilot's success in controlling the glider's flight. Each successive glider model presented increases in complexity, but the detailed photographs, drawings, and commentaries aid in accurate interpretation of the instruction text and understanding the principles involved in flight. Rossoni's references to observations made in the world around us, such as a bird's flight pattern around obstacles, link the developing knowledge of flight with our understanding of the world as we see it. These associations create a deeper understanding of the concepts involved in flight while encouraging the glider builder to seek answers in the natural world.

Rossoni encourages the glider builder and pilot to experiment with designs and flight techniques, offering suggestions along the way. Through his encouragement, the novice builder and pilot learns to apply scientific and engineering practices that lead to design modifications that improve control of the glider's flight.

The author ends the book with a chapter titled "More Fun With Walkalong Gliders" in which he provides suggestions for piloting the walkalong glider and then sharing the new found appreciation for controlled flight. Step-by-step instructions and pointers are provided for launching, flying, and landing the glider. Rossoni next shares his experiences with competitions and glider lessons. He provides pointers for walkalong glider competitions and what to expect when participating in a walkalong glider competition so that newcomers, as well as experienced pilots, can share their appreciation, enthusiasm, and knowledge.

This book offers an excellent avenue to introduce the elements of flight. Middle school students can begin to independently follow the precise instructions and explanations about concepts in flight. The author provides tips and encouragement for the more advanced designs and construction materials. Inspired by Tyler's Air Surfer walkalong glider, Commercial Glider pilot, Phil Rossoni (See About the Author), pursues the evolution of design, build and demonstration of flying a variety of Walkalong Gliders in his new book. (See Preface)
Tyler is the son of Dr. Paul MacCready Jr, designer and engineer of the human powered aircraft Condor that won the 1st & Gossamer Albatross that won the 2nd coveted Kremer Prizes in Aviation. Gossamer Albatross was successfully flown across the English Channel with human power. (See Foreword)
As a Private Pilot of powered, glider and hang glider type of aircraft myself, I have witnessed Phil's demonstrations at the Wings Over Westerly events hosted by the Westerly Airport Association in Westerly, Rhode Island, where kids age 8-17 were given free airplane rides for EAA Young Eagles by pilots and aircraft of Groton Ct EAA Chapter 334. (See Acknowledgements). Also, I can appreciate Phil's hope that this book will introduce the elements of controlled flight at an early age, following in the footsteps of the early pioneers, which can encourage advancing to more technically advanced and expensive aircraft at a later age. Once committed to the curiosity of flight, you will become a student for life.
Walkalong Gliders are many steps above the customary hand launched paper airplanes that fly uncontrolled once released.
Instructions for assembly, with household tools and supplies, launching and flying, indoors and outdoors, are complete with numerous photos and illustrations for six variations of Walkalong Gliders that require skills from novice to expert. (See Inside of Book)
