Excellent Guide for Handling Money Values

A good philosophical account about money, although initially when I picked it up from the library shelf I thought it would present tips on saving or making more money.

Full of examples from history -Jane Austin, Cincinnatus etc and it reflected my own ideas about money, as well.

Perhaps an outstanding feature of the book is its balanced and realistic (rather than idealistic) model. The author on one hand acknowledges the importance of money and on the other denounces the possession of a huge amount of wealth, if it is not put to good use. Towards the end, he talks about `inner wealth' where he discusses the example of Cincinnatus which I thought was quite powerful.

He carries a brilliant idea from beginning to the end about the differentiation of `money worries' with `money troubles' and I think I will quote this book in my future life because of this differentiation that I had never thought of before.

The author has been very honest in including a separate chapter in the end about his source of inspiration, chapter by chapter, in

the end.

The language was simple and style marvellous.

The only criticism was that at places the author went too deep into his descriptions, which sometimes became difficult to comprehend. However, this is due to my own failing and poor knowledge----perhaps a problem with any philosophical idea when read by a common man.

Simple to understand, but not simplistic

For most of my life, I've had a difficult relationship with money--either I spend it like there's no tomorrow, or I hoard it as if I'll never see it again. Any purchase I make, good or bad, I struggle with guilt. I've known that these attitudes I have are a psychological issue, but I haven't known where to start in figuring them out. Armstrong provided that for me. With gentle but firm words, he provides a safe place to explore what is a sensitive and emotional issue.

Well worth your time, and yes, money.

There are two types of money problems: "money troubles" and "money worries". The former relates to our immediate circumstance (bills, debt, upcoming payments), whereas the latter is our inner dialogue about our relationship to money: how much do we need, what is enough, will it make me happy, and so on.

This book does not address the money troubles question - for that, find some other books. However, even if money troubles is the immediate problem, you should still read this book, as it builds a great and practical framework for how to think about our "money worries". For example, as the author points out, first we should separate our "needs" and "wants": you may want many things but not really need them, and you may need things that are out of your financial reach. Having a good relationship with money is not about denouncing it, or seeking to making millions, but rather becoming conscious about how it helps us achieve our larger goals - i.e. how to flourish as individuals.

The book is easy to read and packed with practical examples and advice. Well worth your time, and yes, money.

The perfect item to help your child to read about Lego Friends.

If your girl loves everything related to Lego Friends like mine is, you can be certain that this book would be a nice surprise to her.

The first 31 pages of the book will present all the characters that can be found in the Lego Friends products. Then, the book will present you ALL the animals also found in the boxes of Lego Friends. Following behind the animals, you will learn about all the different hobbies that the characters enjoy doing. Living in Heartlake City, the characters have numerous places to go from houses to school without forgetting the places they work or enjoy spending time. All these locations are also part of the book. Finally and not the least, you can discover all the vehicles that the characters use to go to various places in the city.

I am very impressed with the design of the Lego Friends and the detailed that was put into each scene available for purchase. To be honest, I would like to be a girl again and have these cool playthings. But I am a mom and I enjoy seeing my girl playing with her Lego friends and with the other Lego products that we have (including the ones I used to play with when I was her age!). The book will provide fun reading material for the girl in your life who enjoys her Lego friends.

Actually, the book is perfect for practicing reading with your child if she is at the age of being able to read independently. Each page contains just enough reading material to encourage her to read more in order to learn more about Lego Friends.

Lego fan must have

My 6 year old got this for her birthday a few months ago and loves this book. She carries it with her everywhere. She even got sick in the car and because it was with her she ruined it. We had to order it a second time and it is still carried around. My daughter is a great reader so I can tell you about every stinkin' Lego friends character without looking it up because she is constantly reading it to me. If you have a Lego fan it's a must for your collection. Unless of course you don't want them knowing how many sets are available. I'm reminded daily that we haven't bought them all yet.

Good Book, Good Products

My 6 year old LOVED this book. It is exactly as descibed, a character encyclopedia of all the Lego and Friends characters. The book also talks about all the Lego and Friends sets. This one was a real hit at my daughters school with girls ages 4-10. It also includes an Emily lego friend doll that is not offered in any of the lego and friends sets which is a real perk as my daugher was able to enjoy it even more. As Lego and Friends collectors, we believe this book is a great buy for any little girl who enjoys legos.

About the Author

Dr. James M. Rubenstein received his B.A. from the University of Chicago in 1970, M.Sc. from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1971, and Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1975. He is Professor of Geography at Miami University, where he teaches urban and human geography.

 

Dr. Rubenstein also conducts research in the automotive industry and has published three books on the subject–The Changing U.S. Auto Industry: A Geographical Analysis (Routledge); Making and Selling Cars: Innovation and Change in the U.S. Auto Industry (The Johns Hopkins University Press); and Who Really Made Your Car? Restructuring and Geographic Change in the Auto Industry (W.E. Upjohn Institute, with Thomas Klier).

 

Dr. Rubenstein is also the author of the bestselling Contemporary Human Geography, as well as Introduction to Contemporary Geography. He also writes a weekly column about local food for the Oxford Press. Winston, a lab-husky mix with one brown eye and one blue eye, takes Dr. Rubenstein for long walks in the woods every day.

solid textbook

This text is an easy read for both the eyes and brain due to the font choice and layout. Illustrations and photographs are visually pleasing as well. I am a pseudogeography junkie with a passion for the human experience, development, and social justice issues around the globe. This text worked well in these areas of my learning experience. A social work major is responsible for the content of this review! Well Done, however, a bit on the expensive side.

Required course material.

I purchased it for no other reason than it was required for college course. The book is fine, serves its purpose for the course. The shipping was horrific. I ordered it a week before class began, it is now two weeks into the course and it still hasn't arrived. Pony express may have been a faster shipping effort....

If I have an option to provide no starts, that's all this book deserves. Author contradicts himself so many times just after he finishes some thing he says such as old to new. It is so confusing; you will never understand what he wants to convey. One words describes it all: Pathetic.

An Extraordinary Book

A biography or autobiography is usually read to gain some insight into a famous or infamous personality. Kindles price for this work $2.99 hardly put Thomas Wolfe in those categories, so why read this book?

Wolfe digs deep into the human spirit and sours above even the chosen of his generation in the offerings he is making to us, but today his message may be lost in his unrequited love of words. The Quest: "At its rare infrequent best, out of your blind and famished gropings in the jungle-depths, you may pluck out a shining word--achieve a moment's flash of grace and intuition--a half-heard whisper of the vast unuttered language that you seek--perhaps a moment's taste of fame, a brief hour's flash of the imagined glory that you thirst for."

There is a story than once he was seen running in the streets of New York shouting "I wrote 10,000 words today, I wrote ...." On a topic that might be a casual aside in a contemporary novel, Wolfe offers us a chapter. His treatment of racial references is in the phraseology of his time but not racist as some reviewers imply elsewhere - they perhaps did not read on. His autobiographical Eugene is on a relentless quest that often is diverted into directionless wanderings that might have been edited out by an already overworked editor Maxwell Evarts Perkins.

But if you just want to savor what a word-smith is capable of read his works as you would a book of poetry for its flavor and its impact. I find myself often wandering off into memories ignited by his wanderings. He seems to have missed nothing of life's occurrences; but 1054 pages?

He died young of a later conquered disease; our loss.

Wolfe is a writer's writer...

Thomas Wolfe is a favorite author of both William Faulkner and Phillip Roth. You can see why Wolfe is a writer's writer. Every sentence is perfectly crafted. With a couple exceptions toward the end, there is no run-on-stream-of-consciousness creativity: Just beautiful descriptions of the everyday lives of a southern family that make them seem like grand historical figures. You will learn and remember more about the class system of the Jim Crow period's South in ten pages of this book (when Eugene and his joy-riding drunken Ivy League buddies get jailed by crooked cops in a small South Carolina town) than reading 100 pages of non-fiction post-bellum history. On a lighter note, his description of English 'cuisine' will leave you laughing after every sentence.
The chapters involving the slow death of his father from cancer certainly qualify as one of the most profound examples of great American writing.
I loved reading 'Look Homeward Angel' a few years ago and was inspired to read 'Time and the River' after watching the movie 'Genius'. The movie described how much editing it took to get 'Angel' down from 1000 pages to 500. 'Time' could have used more editing as well...according to the movie it was taken down from 2000 to 1000 pages. Wolfe just had too much to say in his short life and too many different ways he wanted to say it. But the reader can self-edit through his descriptive paragraphs. Reading this book is a wonderful experience.
The Kindle edition is the best dollar you'll ever spend.

Your writing skill will benefit.

When I mentioned to my old college roommate how much I admired Thomas Wolfe and that I was captivated by Of Time and the River, I got a soft rebuke. His response was that now after forty years of teaching at Mercer, his attitude towards Wolfe had changed. He did use Look Homeward, Angel in his lectures over the years but didn't seem to have the high admiration that I have for Wolfe. I'll stick with my opinion. Read Look Homeward, Angel and then Of Time and the River. Your writing skill will benefit. I promise.
