This second edition takes a significant step forward by not only making the transition from intuitive to formal methods, but also by reversing the process- using structure theorems to prove that formal systems have visual and symbolic interpretations that enhance mathematical thinking. This is exemplified by a new chapter on the theory of groups.

While the first edition extended counting to infinite cardinal numbers, the second also extends the real numbers rigorously to larger ordered fields. This links intuitive ideas in calculus to the formal epsilon-delta methods of analysis. The approach here is not the conventional one of 'nonstandard analysis', but a simpler, graphically based treatment which makes the notion of an infinitesimal natural and straightforward.

This allows a further vision of the wider world of mathematical thinking in which formal definitions and proof lead to amazing new ways of defining, proving, visualising and symbolising mathematics beyond previous expectations.

Ian Stewart, Emeritus Professor, University of Warwick,David Tall, Emeritus Professor, University of Warwick

Ian Stewart is Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at the University of Warwick. He remains an active research mathematician and is a Fellow of the Royal Society. Famed for his popular science writing and broadcasting, for which he is the recipient of numerous awards, his bestselling books include: Does God Play Dice?, Nature's Numbers, and Professor Stewart's Cabinet of Mathematical Curiosities. He also co-authored The Science of Discworld series with Terry Pratchett and Jack Cohen

David Tall is Emeritus Professor of Mathematical Thinking at the University of Warwick. Internationally known for his contributions to mathematics education, his most recent book is How Humans Learn to Think Mathematically (2013).

Comprehensive and clear

Stewart and Tall have written some excellent mathematical texts, and this book is one of them. It deals with the basics of mathematics and treats them in a clear but thorough way. Although it is probably not essential, it is a good accompaniment to anybody starting a mathematics degree.

They take the approach that one should already be familiar with an idea (via examples) before seeing its definition. This works well, although sometimes the effect is that the pace is slow and the exposition is drawn out.

Excellent Book for the High School Mathsters

This book was written for those inquisitive/advanced high school students (6th formers in England) to give them an introduction to the number systems, formalization in mathematics and the concept of proof. Stewart is well-known for his clear writing and this book is an excellent example.

About the Author

Mark C. Carnes

Mark C. Carnes received his undergraduate degree from Harvard and his Ph.D in history from Columbia University. He has chaired both the history and American studies departments at Barnard College and Columbia University, where he serves as the Ann Whitney Olin professor of history. He is also the general editor of the American National Biography, whose 27th volume will appear in 2011. Carnes has published numerous books on American social and cultural history, including Secret Ritual and Manhood in Victorian America (1989), Past Imperfect: History According to the Movies (1995), Novel History: Historians and Novelists Confront America’s Past (2001) and Invisible Giants: 50 Americans That Shaped the Nation but Missed the History Books (2002). Carnes also pioneered the Reacting to the Past pedagogy, which won the Theodore Hesburgh Award as the top outstanding pedagogical innovation in the nation (2004). In Reacting to the Past, college students play elaborate games, set in the past, their roles informed by classic texts. (For more on Reacting, see: www.barnard.edu/reacting.) In 2005 the American Historical Association named Carnes the recipient of the William Gilbert Prize for the best article on teaching history. His Mind Games: Rethinking Higher Education will be published in 2012.

John A. Garraty held a Ph.D from Columbia University and an L.H.D. from Michigan State University. He was the Gouverneur Morris professor emeritus of history at Columbia. Fragmented and Light in Substance

This book would be more for a class in social studies then for an intro to history class. Dealt with way to much on social issues and not much on actual history. The book is very fragmented and each chapter jumps around from special subject to special subject and then back to actual historical facts. The weight of each subject from chapter to chapter is very fragmented. One chapter would be heavily based with names and facts and other chapters more a vague overview. The way it was written was unorganized and I think geared more to a high school level. They tried to bring in current events and relate to historical events but I thought that the examples they used were ridiculous and cheesy. The book gives two vague paragraphs to the concentration camps but gives two complete pages each to the movies Chicago, Titanic and Saving Private Ryan. The nuremberg trials don't even rate a mention in this book. Very light on history and too heavy on social perceptions.

Be Aware of Differences in Kindle Eitions

All three of the textbooks I purchased are unavailable through the Kindle Cloud, which means they cannot be accessed from school by most students. It is available to read from Kindle for PC, Kindle for MAC, iPad, and android tablet... which are not allowed in our classrooms here. So be advised.

About the content. I think it should be slightly re-edited for reading digitally. One problem I have in following the text on screen is that pictures and charts are inserted into the middle of sentences. I would rather not scroll so far to finish a sentence, then scroll back to read the chart or examine the pictures. I would also like to be able to search for study items within a single chapter, instead of getting search results from the whole book.

anyone with any interest in yoga or meditation, must buy this book.

I'm almost laughing just thinking about its price of five dollars..

I put it in my Amazon cart because Swami wrote my first yoga book [Integral Hatha Yoga] and I knew him to be a genuine authority on Hatha Yoga, and, as I was also buying Swami's translation of 'Yoga Sutras of Patanjali' [also, a treasure of its type] and having an interest in meditation generally.. five dollars..

cant be much . . . how pleasantly surprised was I !

this is a genuine how-to guide which anyone could use with success . .

its small size and give-away price together with its structure make it obvious that this little treasure has been produced as a gift to us ..

A good read if you are a fan of Vikings on History Channel! (If you want to get an idea of future episodes in the series.)

The book is easy to read for the most part. It marks where things were translated and gives the full translation or description at the end of the chapters. I was interested in reading this, as most people will be, because I am a fan of Vikings on History Channel. I wanted to know more about the stories told about Ragnar and his sons out of interest and also to figure out where the show is going.

I will try to avoid any spoilers here. If you are a fan and want to know what is ahead, it's worth the read, although the History Channel is able to take creative license in a good way because there are some conflicting stories about Ragnar and a lot of gaps in time that were not filled in. If you are familiar with the show and Vikings in general you know that there is no written history left by them during the Dark Ages.

The information we have, and that was used to write this book is from several sources, including Christians who were raided by the Vikings, having a very biased view of them, oral tradition and stories handed down, etc. From the book and other sources that the people in the stories including Ragnar and his sons, although there are no written records by the during their time, there are records of their descendants after.

It is interesting how warlike the culture is with scant resources in the Dark Ages with no written records, yet they were well ahead of their times, treating women more equally in some ways than other countries and cultures.

It was worth the purchase and read to me. (I bought it on Kindle.) There are other books that have similar stories or are complimentary in the Saga Packs. They are very reasonable purchase price on Kindle as well if you want to read more.

The construction of tunnels involves the resolution of various complex technical problems depending on the geological and geological-environmental context in which the work fits.

About the Author

Paola Gattinoni is Assistant Professor of Applied Geology for the Politecnico di Milano. She teaches geologic-technical survey and hydrogeology and she is the author of more than 60 papers concerning water flow in fractured rocks; interactions between fluvial dynamics and slope stability, landslides and groundwater modelling; statistical analysis application in geological and hydrogeological fields, and geological and hydrogeological risk assessment.

Enrico Maria Pizzarotti is a civil engineer who graduated from Politecnico di Milano. He has been working as a designer and consultant in tunneling, underground and geotechnical works, and hydroelectric power plants for more than 25 years. He is now Senior Partner and Technical Director of Pro Iter S.r.l. (an engineering company in Milan). He is the author of more than 30 technical papers concerning underground excavation, deep foundations, slope stabilization, ground improvement technologies and rock mechanics.

Laura Scesi is Professor of Applied Geology at the Politecnico di Milano (School of Civil and Environmental Engineering). She teaches engineering geology and geological-technical survey. Over the years she has conducted extensive research especially on underground excavations connected with geological and hydrogeological problems; landslides and risk analysis; and hydraulic circulation in rocks for the prediction of water inflows in tunnels. She has published more than 80 scientific works and books.
