About the Author
Maxick, whose name was "anglicised" from the German, Max Sick, was anything but a man in poor health! Paradoxically, he was to become known as "The Muscular Phenomenon." He was born in Bregenz, a town in the extreme western tip of Austria, on June 28, 1882. Although as a child he had been sickly and of poor physique, by long training in weightlifting and gymnastics he became a phenomenon of muscularity and strength. Although standing only 5 feet 3 3/4 inches and weighing at his best from 145 to 147 pounds, Maxick set records in weightlifting that few heavyweights of his day could equal. Outside of straight weightlifting, Maxick showed up equally well. Indeed, in hand-balancing and gymnastics he could perform some astounding feats. As would he expected in view of his extraordinary strength, Maxick had a superb muscular development. So completely were all his voluntary muscles under his control that he could make any desired group "dance" in time to music. He was, in fact, one of the first great exponents of the art of "muscle control," and could do things in this department that astonished even the great Eugen Sandow, who himself was an expert in the art. For many years, Maxick made his home in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he conducted a gymnasium and health studio. He also went periodically on exploring expeditions into the Matto Grosso of Brazil. Maxick died in Buenos Aires about 1960.

a forgotten gem
By Bad dragon
I am very grateful that I was able to discover this book. I was practising nauli (abdominal muscle control - considered the most important exercise in hatha yoga) for quite a few months at the time and while I was really impressed with the effects I felt like I was missing something since I couldn't get the muscular isolation to be very deep. I found the fix in this little book and more. It's like nauli for the whole body. Since I had seen the great results from nauli - improved digestion and a great change in my abdomen (not a stiff six pack, but much better - the muscles feel like water and even vibrate a little when I bump them, but they are quite strong when contracted), I have perfect faith in the system of exercise outlined within. As I was reading the book, I found myself nodding my head to the common sense statements that Max was bringing forth. The training method is simple, natural and unlike most of the methods today, it involves the mind, which makes it not boring. I found that very interesting as it is very similar to the practice of tai chi chuan, which as the classics say is "conscious movement". I highly recommend this book.

Body Development by Will Power.
By strength builder
The author was born on June 28th 1882 in Wurtenburg,Germany, with the given name of Max Sick and later he adapted the stage name of Maxick. At birth he was very sickly and weak and because of his frailty was forbidden to engage in any form of exercise by his doctors. Having bearly survived at birth and in his early youth his parents continued to over protect him and reinforced doctors orders throughout his early years. While his body may have been weak; in his mind he developed a strong desire for physical strength and believed that it's attainment was possible.
In violation of the orders from his doctors and his parents he made a crude dumbell on his own that his father destroyed. At this point the desire to be strong and muscular seemed to take on a new urgency and drive toward it's fulfillment.
With the help of his intuitve abilities he started to realize that just mentally contracting his muscles and projecting into them while visualizing them as being strong and well developed seemed to move them in that direction. As a result he had stumbled on to a universal law that has been discovered by numerous individuals in various cultures throughout history - "That all strength originates from within and starts in the mind". Infact, it was the basis of the thousands of year old Ancient Indian yogic "Dhandal and Bhasky" muscle and strength building exercises.
Maxick continued to practice his Muscle Control/tensing exercises and over time became one of the best built men of all time and is recognised by most experts as the greatest Muscle Control artist ever.
When he finally decided to takeup weightlifting; he found that after only six months of practice with weights that he was able to lift more with one hand than the biggest men in the gym were able to lift with both hands. This was particularly amazing considering that Maxick was a small man standing only 5 feet 3 3/4 inches tall and weighing about 145 pounds. Throughout his weighlifting career he continued to set records and defeat men much larger than he was. In one competition he won all three classes; lightweight, middle weight, and heavy weight.
Muscle Control goes by many names including Tension Exercises, Isometric Power Flexing, Isotension etc
Bob Hoffman, "The Father Of World Weightlifting" Legendary US OlympicWeightlifting Coach, founder of The York Barbell Conpany and "Strength And Health Magazine" says in his book "Functional Isometric Contraction" which was published in 1962: "When my two older brothers visited me lately and I was showing them my home gymnasium, and my new course Functional Isometric Contraction for weightlifters and body builders, they said, " that is the way your father trained." "So often I have said that my father had more muscles than I have seen since and we must remember that I am in the muscle business, and I have seen thousands of extraordinary physical specimens. He exercised incessantly and could make any muscle group in his body feel like blocks of wood. I always believed that his exercises verged more on the Tension type, than Functional Isometric Contraction, but there is a very close similarity."
These exercises will not only develop physical strength and muscularity, but the mind as well. In his book "Exercise Without Movement" [1986] Swami Rama, the principle subject in the research on yogis at the Menninger Foundation, says of the Muscle Control type exercises in that book:
"The exercises in this book, however, are yoga practices with benefits far exceeding ordinary muscular movement. In these subtle exercises one vitalizes muscles, respiration, senses, nervous system, and mind...most importantly in these exercises one comes to experience the tremendous potential of the mind itself, and one makes a dramatic step inward through the layers of personality toward the center of the mind and consciousness."
I recommend "Muscle Control" to anyone interested in health, strength, and body development.
John Peterson of Bronze Bow Publishing has continued to update these principles and feature them in the books that he publishes.

Great as history and instruction.
By .
Maxick was a strongman / weightlifter / muscle control expert. His promoters claimed he developed the strength to lift heavy weights with his muscle control exercises, but Maxick himself denied this. Muscle control exercises are a valuable part of developing the physique, but only a part: Muscles can be developed more efficiently, (-with- weights), if muscular awareness is developed with control exercises, & obviously, muscles can be shown more effectively if greater control is developed. Muscle control also develops small muscles that heavy exercises neglect. Considering that no equipment is needed, & that there are no safety issues, there's no reason to neglect muscle control exercises. Maxick's prime was a century ago, yet he's still the greatest muscle control expert.
