I want to see families be healthy, spend time together and talk about what matters most. But many are too busy with 'good' activities to not get around to the 'best'. Some parents think that moral and spiritual formation aren't as essential as academics. 

So why aren't more parents leading the spiritual formation of their children? Why do they outsource their responsibility to the church or the Christian school?
I think it's because they don't have a realistic model and a simple plan.
 
That's why I wrote 52 Creative Family Time Experiences and field-tested it with more than five hundred families - to design a model and plan for parents to bring faith home.
 
My wife, Suzanne and I realized that a formal, cookie-cutter, sit-down-and-read-the-Bible-time would not work for our family. We opted for a more experiential and relational approach that was customized for our kids' learning styles. 

In scripture (Deuteronomy 6) I discovered that there are 36 Impression Points to make in our families. It's a spiritual matrix: Six have to do with who and when (when you get up, as you walk along the way ...) and six have to do with how you make those impressions using our God-given senses.
 
Before learning modalities, God provided us The Shema - His instruction to engage touch, sight, written words, spoken words, smell and taste to help us remember and embrace His word. I've developed these impression points into a Family Faith Plan that is simple, realistic, relational and customizable for any family.
 
In addition to the informal, relational strategy, I offer a year's worth of fun, intentional experiences for families to grow in faith. They only take twenty minutes and use materials you have at home. I've included adaptations for younger children as well as teens.

Great and doable things to do to build Faith@Home!

Tim's book is about as good as it gets in this genre. He has put together a fun, practical, and spiritually authentic set of activities you can do with your kids to encourage faith activities and conversations. The lessons (I hate to call them lessons because that feels too formal, but you get the idea) engage all the senses in order to hit on every learning style. Tim understands that kids can get restless, or that they may want to say hard things to parents. He handles with grace the reality of how people of all ages struggle and connect. He provides creative and doable activities regarding various Biblical themes and key milestones and holidays. He includes thoughts for dealing with younger kids AND with teens, so there's flexibility in how you can use the ideas. Every lesson includes a Bible reading, a shared activity, a discussion, and a prayer.

Lynne and I will recommend Tim's book whenever we speak with parents about the importance of authentic faith conversations at home. This is a truly usable resource. Thanks Tim!

Great start, not quite what I hoped for...

In 52 Creative Family Time Experiences, Timothy Smith sets out to assist parents who are either unfamiliar with, or uncertain about how to develop, an intentional approach to teaching, modeling, and sharing faith at home. In part one of the book, Smith briefly discusses the various learning styles and multi-sensory approach to the activities he has included. He also discusses the necessity of the impact of faith on the parent prior to attempting to impact the children. The included reminder that teaching and modeling faith should occur first in the home and be supported in the local church, instead of the reverse, is extremely welcome.

Following part one, Smith gives 52 different plans for activities and experiences which can be used for the stated purpose, along with suggestions for possible modification to suit the needs of preschoolers or teens. Each activity includes a Bible reading and activity, and a brief (2-3) question discussion section. It is this section where the book appears weakest. After stellar introductory material, and followed by a motivating and compelling conclusion, the discussion ideas contained in the activity plans appear to leave faith discussions at surface depth. Questions like "what happened when..." and "why did..." could be strengthened by the question "so what are you going to do about it?" and perhaps even a plan to follow through. Smith mentions the "iY" generation and comments on their "I-centeredness," yet most of the discussions ask them to focus on themselves with little concern for their impact (and potential to impact) others around them. If this generation wants something experiential and participatory, the experiences Smith offers to families could be enhanced with ideas or suggestions on how to apply the discussion material into action that reaches beyond themselves.

After such a great introduction, it was disappointing to see the majority of the book remaining at such a basic level. While the book never claims to be "theology for children," the depth of discussion and activity seemed to promote a shallow faith, although it may be extremely sticky.

* A practical Life oriented book for BUSY families who want to walk and talk about the Bible with their kids and need a jumpstart. A book that helps create a guide for purposeful parenting in the enjoyable moments that make a family!
* It's not a book that you need to read in one sitting, you could read the intro and set up in less than an hour, and have a framework for a whole year of weekly family time! It is adaptable for many ages, and has a materials needed list at the end. Each activity was easy to follow, laid out on two pages, and readable.
* As a teacher I love the solid pedagogical foundations that take into consideration learning styles, personalities, with relevant kid oriented activities that are connected to a scriptural truth/concept that our kids need.
* I see it as a springboard of ideas for a new believer, a parent who lacks time to think up `fun' to do with their kids, or who wants concrete ideas for a family time.
* Whether or not we'd like to admit it (those who are in children's ministry) Sunday morning, midweek programs, summer camp, VBS, our programming only affects one dimension of a child's life, it needs reinforcement and connections at home, and these ideas are just what I'd like to see happen in homes on a regular basis. This is NOT a bible study or theological book, but rather a way to talk about a biblical verse/truth in a setting where it is connected to real life activities.
* If you are looking for a family Bible study, a theology book for children, a deep analysis of the scripture, it's not here. But if you want ideas on how to integrate a biblical truth with a fun, memorable activity that your kids might just giggle, smile, and ask "can we do this again", then this book is for you. How deep the truth affects their lives, is left up to the adults leading the family time. But this book's ideas have the potential for true `family memories' and inside jokes, silly stories, all rooted in character or lesson of truth!
* The `main point' and the scriptural truths seemed to be addressing solid concepts our children need to see integrated into life, emphasizing who God is, how He cares for us, how He asks us to live. I imagine that some scholars may be disturbed if they read only the main idea/verse, but as a child oriented teacher, I see the truths that are relevant, could be connected to a full-fledged family devotion or scripture reading, but our kids are often not ready for a long, drawn out inquiry, and these short ideas are central to building a foundation of who God is, and how I should glorify Him.
* I'll have to report back on how it works with our kids and if the actual activities achieve their goals, but I have a feeling that is based more on the delivery by me, than it is the plans of the author! His concepts seem well thought out and achievable.

He claims the spiritual-but-not-religious crowd has always been here, often linked to progressive social and political activists via a social gospel. Having established the appreciable history of American spirituality, Schmidt's last chapter argues against the common critique of it as narcissistic and vapid. It is rather the changing expression of a broad American spiritual left that can counter today's dominant spiritual right. It's as grounded in history as any conservatism but also dynamic and capacious enough to accommodate different paths. Written following the rules of academia—with endnotes citing 19th-century journals and correspondence—yet highly accessible, Schmidt is sympathetic and scholarly about a wide variety of spiritual pilgrims and paths. The American invention of spirituality was largely a search for a religious world beyond that of British Protestantism. Schmidt chronicles the rise of nineteenth-century religious liberalism in Transcendentalism, Unitarianism, Quakerism, followers of Emerson and Whitman, Spiritualists, New Thought optimists, Vedantists, and Theosophists. Many figures, famous (Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, W. E. B. DuBois, William James) and now obscure, and topics including homegrown mystics, solitude as a defining feature of American spiritual life (e.g., in the legend of Johnny Appleseed), and the American embrace of such Asian practices as meditation receive Schmidt's attention in this fair-minded study of the historical importance of religious liberalism and its role in modern American spirituality. Subject worth exploring misses the mark

I excitiedly picked up this book when it came out but only recently found the time to sit down with it. The topic is one that I am fascinated by and have studied a bit. I walked away at the end overall disappointed. That is not to say the book does not have merit.

First the pluses...

The subject matter....as the cultural creatives or integral inclined individuals who are "spiritual but not religious" look to see the pattern or history in America that has been brewing on the cutting edge of religious/spiritual thought the last 150 years or so...the subject is a timely one that needs to be fully explored....thanks for taking it on.

Covering some of the essential forces.....Emerson and the transcendentalists are explored and cited.

A few engaging stories of lesser known influences.....I liked the stories of Ralph Waldo Trine (with whom I have read and was familiar) and Sarah Farmer (with whom I was not).

Now the minuses....

The format of chapters focusing on some topic (e.g., meditation) and how they impacted our growth....this seemed forced, there was too much overlap of the stories with the details of those brought out in other chapters and led to each chapter jumping around to bring too many short references to other influences that maybe related to the chapter's "topic".

The author's writing style was not always engaging. Some of his stories engaged (as mentioned), but (and this may be a product of how he outlined his chapters into topics) there seemed to be too much jumping around. He could have benefited from using a bit more of a sequential fact telling to help his reader stay with the overall story....bottom line was that there were really engaging stories within chapters and they were strung together with other details that led to the overall direction of the chapter being somewhat lost.

The biggest complaint.....so many major influences upon the modern desire for spiritual experiences were either not in the book or only briefly mentioned in some passing reference (or were mentioned sporactically as he wanted to make a point about them in this themed chapters, hence losing the importance of them). For example, he mentions New Thought collectively but primarily points at Dresser as the entire subject. He does mention some of Quimby and a bit of Mary Baker Eddy and Christian Science in reference to NT but most NT scholars quickly point out that Christian Science is not truly New Thought...readers of this book would think that it is. Major New Thought influences are not mentioned at all! Where is Emma Curtis Hopkins, Charles and Myrtle Fillmore (Unity), or Ernest Holmes (Science of Mind)? All had much more lasting influence than Dresser or Trine....and in the more popular culture, where is Dale Carnegie, Norman Vincent Peale, or Napoleon Hill? Where are other major Eastern influences such as Yogananda? I could go on....If this truly is the "making of American Spirituality" as the title implies, then this books greatest failure is one of omission of very real and vital influences upon that topic.

Finally, the payoff on current culture in the book seemed to be reduced to pitting traditional conservative Christians vs the "Church of Oprah". Although Oprah certainly is an influence, she is more indicative of the maturing of Americans such that those few who were on the cutting edge of sprituality in the 19th century are now growing in numbers due to more and more people transcending old worldviews and moving into what has been labeled the cultural creatives (or the green and higher meme levels in Spiral Dynamics). This natural evolution of our culture is the end game story which the author overlooked.

I would have given this book 2 1/2 stars if possible....kudos for tackling the topic....kudos for some engaging stories of a few of the influences on American spirituality....however for someone looking for the "making of American spirituality", please know that you are getting only certain interesting pieces of background presented to you without a full picture of what is truly unfolding in our current society.

a gem

This book is a gem. It tells the history of what Schmidt calls the "liberal" religious tradition in America. It shows us the golden kernel at the heart of what today is often diluted. Kickboxing yoga enthusiasts no more invalidate Emerson and Whitman, than the Inquisition invalidates Jesus of Nazareth. The book is largely about some wonderful people little known today but influential in their time. These fine folks carried the torch from Emerson and Whitman to the mid-20th century. Schmidt tells their stories beautifully, and reading about them is a joy. I can't think of a better use of our time than reading about great souls like Thomas Kelly, Max Ehrmann, and Sarah Farmer.

A Must Read for all Prospective Teachers heading to Japan

Currie-Robson has done his homework, and paints a sobering portrait of the teaching drudgery known as "Eikaiwa". Exposing the dark underbelly of Japan's English teaching industry, English to Go explores the questionable business practices, unfavorable working conditions, and often illegal tactics some of the major eikaiwa chains employ. It's not surprising that the current state of English education in Japan is so messed up when money and profits come before investing in teachers, nurturing talent, and actually caring about student learning. Eikaiwa and it's influence has essentially turned English into a fast-food like commodity- slick packaging, easy to digest, but devoid of any value. It's a good read for anyone thinking of coming over to teach in Japan. Know what you're getting into, and know what your options are.

An inside look at the eikaiwa industry in 21st century Japan

This book is a must read for people who are thinking about working at Big Eikaiwa (AEON, Berlitz, ECC, Nova) or at an ALT dispatch company such as Interac. The author interviewed many people who worked for these companies. He shared their experiences and explained the reasons behind their employers' actions. For example, many big eikaiwa chains still consider their foreign teachers "part time" employees so they won't be obligated to enroll them in the national health and pension plans, even though their foreign teachers almost always work more than 30 hours a week. This way, the employers save money, but the teachers will have to pay their own health and pension costs.

The eikaiwa industry is not the same as it was a couple of decades ago. Back then, foreign teachers earned enough money at Big Eikaiwa to fund their stay in Japan and put a down payment on a house in their home countries. Nowadays, they can barely make a living in Japan due to enormous pay cuts. I saw an advertisement for a teaching position starting at ¥185,000 per month, which is about $1,500. The school will provide an apartment, but the rent has to be paid for by the teacher. After all is said and done (taxes, rent, food, transportation costs, etc.), I don't think the teacher will have much left.

If you're going to teach at an eikaiwa or work for an ALT dispatch company, pick up this book, and read it from cover to cover. You need to know what you're getting yourself into if you aren't already aware of the eikaiwa industry in 21st century Japan.

Informative, Revealing and Helpful

A hugely informative, if somewhat depressing, read for an experienced ESL teacher who has just landed in Japan to teach. I recommend this book highly - it spills on a lot of issues that teachers need to be aware of and mainly paints a very sad picture of ESL teacher's prospects and the ESL industry as a whole in Japan. Whats more, it's very well written and easy to absorb - I read it all in a day.

Pavlov LAB Book

I have other battery books by Berndt, Bode, Vinal, Barak,...
All these others are good books but information is decades old.
Pavlov covers more recent development and it is so easy to understand that even an English major can develop a strong technical understanding of the lead-acid battery system.

I have only read the first few chapters but I am very happy with the amount of detailed information about lead-acid batteries in the book. Don't settle for cheaper. This book is well worth the money. However, this book is not for you if you are looking for an overview of lead-acid batteries. It is in depth and requires knowledge in chemistry and science in general to understand. It is perfect for me as I now work in the quality department for a factory that makes lead-acid batteries. I have already learned so much from this book that I have applied to my job.
