One of the better Slocum books.

I've read that these are called formula books because they follow a formula of x number of sexual encounters surrounded by 95% action and well written adventure. I suppose that is true. However, one cannot overlook the other elements such as the fact that based on the number of books in the series, the John Slocum character has laid over 400 different women, all while never bathing and not one time has he caught gonorrhea. Just one time it would be good to read that one adventure when he screams when he pees because of the whore that he nailed in the previous book.
Anyhow, this one has an exceptional story line with interesting twists. Very enjoyable.

Superb Translation of One of the Most Important Texts

To my mind, this translation surpasses all others with which I am familiar. The translation (1) has a flowing literary style that does justice to the rich feel of reading Plato's own prose, (2) is remarkably precise in its reflecting of the original language, with the result that, when one notices something interesting going on in the language of the translation, one will consistently find it is reproducing what is found in the Greek. In both these ways, this is a very trustworthy text--the reader can confidently presume to be experiencing Plato's writing. The dialogue itself--Plato's _Phaedo_--has few parallels for philosophical, literary and cultural depth and importance. It is the conversation Socrates has on the day of his death with a number of philosophical admirers. It is a rich discussion of the nature of knowledge, the nature of virtue, the ultimate nature of reality and especially the nature of death itself. The introduction by the translators is also uncommonly good for putting the reader in a position to read the text well. This is the only translation of the _Phaedo_ that I will assign to my classes. This translation is a fantastic accomplishment.

Socrates is unique among philosophers, not just for his place among the early Greek philosophers, but also for the fact that he is the most famous philosopher to never write his own books. What we know of Socrates comes from contemporary accounts and students, most particularly Plato.

Set in 399 BCE, the Phaedo is a reconstruction of Socrates final conversations with friends on the day he died. We do not know when this dialogue was written, but it was probably before The Republic (Plato's most famous work, also featuring the figure of Socrates). Like The Republic, this dialogue features a well developed theory of Forms -- these are introduced gradually here, slowly filling out the details of each step. This develops the story of the caves idea from Plato's earlier work in epistemological, metaphysical, moral, and semantic terms. Plato also advances the 'imperfection argument' here -- the idea that when we sense something, it is never perfectly the thing we are thinking of, and that idea or standard to which we relate what we see, hear, feel, etc. is tying into a more perfect Form.

However, the idea of the soul is rather less developed here than in The Republic. The soul is simply mind, or intellect - all emotions are here placed as bodily aspects. This is rather Pythagorean in a fashion, that only the soul grasps the perfect Forms, and so should consist of nothing but reasoning ability, for emotions distort and cloud the perceptions and judgments.

In the end of the Phaedo, we witness Socrates drink the hemlock, without fear or trembling, as a philosopher should know the value of life and welcome death with a firm hope. The story is almost religious in nature here.

However, there are other possible readings, and this edition opens these up. This translation is part of a series done by the translators and Focus Publishing of the Plato dialogues. It has an introduction and a glossary of Greek terms, as well as a brief bibliography. The translators avoid a clunky translation by doing some interpretative work, but explain their reasonings in the introduction. They argue in the introduction against many traditional renderings of Phaedo, and as such provide an interesting counterweight to the prevailing editions available.

Grube's translation is lively and accessible, not a dry academic rendering, and certainly no contrived high-formal style that so often distances the classics from modern life. This is serious stuff, but in a mere 60 pages manages to capture much, and Grube's work makes it all the more relevant.

About the Author
Edna B. Foa, Ph.D. is a Professor of Clinical Psychology in Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania and Director of the Center for the Treatment and Study of Anxiety. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology and Personality, from University of Missouri, Columbia, in 1970. Dr. Foa devoted her academic career to study the psychopathology and treatment of anxiety disorders, primarily obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and social phobia and is currently one of the world leading experts in these areas. Dr. Foa was the chair of the DSM-IV Subcommittee for OCD and Co-Chairs the DSM-IV Subcommittee for PTSD. She has also been the chair for the Treatment Guidelines Task Force of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Disorders. Dr. Foa has published several books and over 250 articles and book chapters and has lectured extensively around the world. Her work has been recognized with numerous awards and honors. Among them are: Distinguished Professor Award under the Fulbright Program for International Exchange of Scholars; Distinguished Scientist Award from the American Psychological Association, Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology; First Annual Outstanding Research Contribution Award presented by the Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy; Distinguished Scientific Contributions to Clinical Psychology Award from the American Psychological Association; and Lifetime Achievement Award presented by the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies.

Mastery of OCD: An Indispensable Treatment Manual

Over two decades of basic and applied research, Kozak and Foa have established themselves as two of the world's leading authorities on OCD and other anxiety disorders. This book represents the accumulation of years of scientific data and clinical experience and is a "must-have" for clinicians working with OCD patients.
The primary strength of the manual is its concise, no-nonsense description of exposure and ritual prevention (EX/RP), a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy with proven efficacy. Kozak and Foa take the reader through a session-by-session account of EX/RP. Treatment planning, descriptions of exposure exercises, and relapse prevention are all described in terms that even non-behavioral therapists can understand. In addition, common obstacles to succesful therapy are discussed, along with potential solutions.
The concise nature of the manual is also its primary limitation. Therapists seeking a detailed understanding of the biological, cognitive, and behavioral aspects of OCD will probably be disappointed. Similarly, alternative treatment strategies such as pharmacotherapy and cognitive therapy are not described in much detail. However, if you are seeking a "bible" of EX/RP, presented clearly and concisely, this book will certainly be a vital resource.

When the Future is Past

The legions of the Hungarian cultural diaspora have no better Western representative than Paul Lendvai. This is both praise and caution in assessing this critique of his native land. The hope of 1989 - multi-party democracy, free markets, liberal values, Western integration - seem to have drizzled down the drain in the intervening quarter century. Yet one question Lendvai seems not to stress is who, exactly, really wanted these things in Hungary? Very few, it seemed, beyond a minority of Western-oriented intellectuals.

Thus it comes as no real surprise that the Freedom Fighter legacy has been swallowed by the semi-fascism of the pre-war years. The rise of the Jobbik party, and its paramilitary Hungarian Guard, show that what was rolled back was not the Iron Curtain of '56 but the victory over the Axis in '44. Lendvai's descriptions of rightwing thuggery, aided and abetted by complacent mainstream nationalists and the churches, seem to retroactively justify the Soviet occupation as a "progressive force" after all.

Yet in taking his country to task for allowing the rise of Viktor Orban as the new Horthy, Lendvai seems blinkered as to its causes. He gives due credit to the bankrupting currency-chasing of the Socialist/Liberal years for laying the groundwork. But in praising the austerity program of 2009-2010, in the face of the financial meltdown, Lendvai glowingly quotes on p. 204 "the Hungarians' particular maturity and ability to act rationally," implementing budget cuts without "a single" strike or mass demonstration. Western observers noted with sage nods that "Greece could learn from Hungary."

What erupted instead was a standoff between Orban's Fidesz Party, and the IMF and the European Central Bank. Orban is the villain, of course, for demanding an end to austerity, increasing welfare and pensions, and raising the deficit. On p. 227 Lendvai admits that the critique of Hungary, led by Hillary Clinton, has less to do with its "slide to authoritarianism"; and more to do with "the discriminatory measures taken against foreign banks and investors coupled with an unprecedented smear campaign against the head of the Hungarian central bank."

Like most Westernizers Lendvai has tied the fate of liberal values, and justice for persecuted minorities like the Roma, with "the path of growth" for bankers and Western investors. He thus leaves most of his former countrymen out of a viable future. Yet he is so nonplussed at the rise of Fidesz and the mass applause for its anti-liberal power grabbing. It was the Depression, after all, that produced the rise of fascism in 1930s Europe. This is one "demon of the past" (p. 323) with its "chimera political system" that *cannot* be forgotten in the "national interest" if Hungary is to "come to terms with the bitter lessons of history." Unfortunately, Lendvai seems here to be avoiding some of said lessons himself.

Not anymore, since the high-speed law-factory of Orbanistan has been enacting thousands of Acts in order to build a centralized, state-dominated regime serving only the needs of an autocracy, namely that of Viktor Orbán and his “family”.
